Hello everyone!! I was wondering if I could get a few opinions about whether I should get an sm-57 or an sm-58 mic for my soon to be here 4-track. I am buying a 4-track with my CHRISTmas money and I plan on getting one of these mics, the only thing is, I'm not sure which one I should get. I will be doing both vocals and micing instruments, but I may have a pod on the way, so in that case, plus vocals are a little more important as far as quality, from what I gather, than instruments. So I was wondering if someone could give me an opinion on which of the two, or even maybe a different mic completely, would be best for both applications with possibly leaning towards vocals just a little because of the POD's direct capabilities. Thanks to everyone, especially homerecording!!

well, with your Xmas money, I would get a 58..you could always take the metal ball off and have a 57 (kind of).

Sounds cool

Thanks ametth. That's probably what I'll do. How much of a difference would the ball off of the SM58 make? Thanks again!

Godsguitarist, it's been said that the ball is the only difference in the two...as I undersrand it, the pop screen on the 58 is meant for vocals, without it, you've got an instrument mic, which is what a 57 is, although, lots and lots of people use a regular 57 for vocals as well....gibs

oops, sorry ametth, I just noticed he was asking you...my apologies for jumping in...

Haha, that's cool, gibs, I was actually talking to anyone who will answer. Thanks though!! One thing I noticed from musicians friend is that the frequecy response is a little different, but not much, and (?) the ball could be what effects that anyways. Thanks guys!!

Get a couple of SM57's and use them for everything.

Currently, (12/00), GC is blowing SM57's out the door, for ~$80, including mic stand and cable. SM58's were ~$90, including stand and cable. These are both great mics, and I believe they're fairly identical, except the 58 has the built in 'pop screen' design.

I use 57's for everything, and if I need a pop screen, I put one of those foam windscreens on, that can be bought for about ~$2-$3.00.

WHOA!!! That's a pretty sweet deal on the mics. I'll have to see if I can get a ride to GC (I'm 15). Thanks for the tip, reel!! GC is Guitar Center, scheisskopf. Thanks to everyone, again!!
