Hat STYLE. Not contents.
I "wrote" this song in response the the chilly reception my band got at an anime convention. Nerds are who I am and who I write music for, so I was bummed that they didn't seem to like me.
So I wrote a song just for them!

The plan is to work on a mix with more instrumentation (and thus variety of tone) over the next week or so while soliciting video contributions. If anyone sends me clips of themselves rocking out to one of these songs, I'll try to work them into the final cut.

From a recording standpoint though, what needs work?

Catering to the Base

Lol. This song is awesome.

From a recording standpoint, the main problem is the same as usual - drum sounds sounding bad. The vocals are better than usual. Guitars, noise, and other sounds are all fine.

Thanks, Greg.

The drums are actually entirely samples of old Commodore 64 sounds. I'll probably add some more realistic sounding drums soon.

Should I assume from your second post that the video started working? YouTube might have delayed slightly in putting it up?

Edit:
YouTube said:
This video is not yet processed.

*Shakes fist* YOOOOUUUUTUUUUBEEEE!!!

Ya know, just make the drum bits louder. If it's something gimmicky like Commodore 64 sounds, make them bitches audible. It would be funny and hipster ironic. Give it some thump.

Ah, found the audio. I don't like your hair but I do like your style. It might be intentional, but I feel like you're missing out on some of the low frequencies. The crunch is there, obviously intentional, but it seems to lack some foundation. I approve of your use of your commodore sixtyfor, and would turn it up as well.
Two questions: have you ever gone back to a song after a mixing comment by someone and second, do you do requests? I would like to hear you write a simple, short, completely conventional ballad. Something tells me you'd be really good at it...

Yeah, I'm not sure what's up with Youtube. If you go to the video on YouTube, you can watch it. I don't know why it's "not processed" yet.

I usually try to go back and do at least one or two revisions of a song after getting some feedback here. I almost always try to learn from your advice and apply it to the next mix. (The one downside of having more songs written than I do time is that I can't really spend as much time perfecting each one as I'd like.)

I haven't tried to write a conventional ballad in years! I usually wasn't very good at it when I tried. I may try again if the muse demands it.

Speak of the Devil! Second mix.

I turned the C-64 "drums" up and tried to add more low-end to the guitars.
I also added more compression to the bass to keep it a little more consistent.
Finally, I fixed that spot in the middle of Chocolate Rain where the guitars suddenly get quieter for no apparent reason (did no one notice that?!)

Finally got to see the vid!

My daughter and I watched and laughed. Liked how you worked in the hampster dance and that you could adjust your glasses on the fly like that. Entertaining stuff. Didn't check the new mix yet, but I will...

Commodore 64 drums? You're a legend!

It's a cool little tune. But the chorus part.... 'desert you'... haven't I heard somewhere that before?

Great vocals on this. In fact I think there's a great tune in here struggling to emerge from the mix. If you ever want a second 'mix' interpretation of your tune, I wouldn't mind giving it a shot, even if it was just mp3s of the tracks....

I think the reason you weren't as well received is because the first thing people do when they hear your material is go, "WTF is up w/ that shit?" ... you're all over the place.

You are definitely unique. :)

Your second mix is better, but I'd carve some of the low mid fog out of the bass/drums to better pocket the vocal ... and then call it a day.

I enjoy your work btw ... heck w/ the nerds. They're nerds. :)

That is a distinct possibility!

Bulls, odds are quite good you've heard most parts of this song before. :D A quick run down for anyone not familiar wit some of the source material:

Anime Convention? Bleh... those are the poseurs of the nerd world.. Your music is truly dork rock of the highest caliber.

Risk Astley and Chocolate Rain.

Originality on the volcaised 'doodley doo' solo reminds me of my friend shawn's band. I lol'd

So plus 11.

I can't listen to your songs and not laugh dude. The wit outweighs the mix.

Final Answer.

I don't know because when I heard the Chocolate Rain in there I lost it. My buddies and I rolled for days because of that song on youtube. Atom Bomb's right though dude your songs have a sense of "damn that is funny I love the hell out of it."

+10 on that.

I didn't recognize the other songs until you listed them but I just probably wasn't paying that much attention. I think you got the wildest sound of anything I have heard in my life and though I can't give mix advice because I'm not "that" good yet I think the way your songs fit to it, it is awesome.

Trump

P.S. I didn't comment on the everybody plays acoustic/electric song but I love the hell out of that song.

Cool vid - dark in a "this is me in my room with the light out" sort of way.
FUNNY, nerdy, & nice to see the DIY guitar bass in action too!

I dig it! Sounds like something I would Hear On Eastern Michigan Universities student radio station in 1983 :D...Vocals are awesome....I like it just the way it is...I like it even more that it just made my wife screech at me from the other room "What is that...turn it dowwwnnn!!!":D
pure win, great job!

Alanarbor - I'll be honest. I have no clue what the differences between nerd rock, dork rock, and geek rock even are. (I suppose if your band has a bearded lady then you're probably geek rock...)

Atom - So I'm net +1 point up? Works for me!

Trumpino - Thank you.

Rayc - This was about the last song I'd expect to see described as "dark!" :D

Queepy - If I'm amusing some and alienating others, than my music is doing its job!
