Intersting thread. I know the OP got the answer he was looking for even if it was not what he wanted to hear.

So, let's keep it civilized and back on topic. Thanks everyone!!!

sorry :)

to the OP..read mate, im halfway through mixing audio by roey izhaki...its great because it actually comes with a dvd so you can hear what the authors describing...while im sure good tracking is the given to getting a polished sound it doesn't matter if you cant mix those separate tracks..

I found guerilla home recording an excellent starting point as well...

but my music is shite and my opinion worthless of course :D

To the OP. Recording and mixing are two differrent things. Mastering and MP3 encoding are two other different things. With exception of the MP3 encoding your not going to learn those things over night. They all contribute. Not to mention the gear. I'm not saying you need expensive gear to make a decent or great sounding recording, but to get particular results I would say the gear matters. The environment your tracking in makes a huge difference.

A loaded question gets a loaded answer.

I just listening to an LP on a new turntable my missus bought me. It's from 1990 so was probably recorded in 89 or so.
It has a very nice sound for reference purposes. Very clean recording, uncluttered mix not too much 80's tweaking BUT it does sound VERY polished - as in it has a clean, clear sheen to it.
It's not my fav LP by any stretch but the production, mixing & mastering - not to mention pressing because taht had a lot to do with how the result sounded too - always strikes me when I play it.
Concrete Blonde - Bloodletting. recorded at Battery Studios, London. I assume they didn't really do full digital stuff back then.
Now, it's a LP that has a detached feeling about it - it's not empassioned in performance or production. Icy cool in fact but I assume that's what they were going for.

Arif Mardin's discography, don't get no slicker, what a range of artists...

I was listening to Scritti Politti the other day, first time in a long time... ya it sounds very dated for sure but recording/eq wise.... youza, I sure as hell can't get that quality. Sounds very, very expensive. Dated but expensive.
