signal boost

in acid pro i can duplicate my tracks to get a louder signal, wich i use on my vocals.

i'm going directly into my soundblaster card, do i still need a preamp?

if so why?
 
in a soundcard there is already a preamp, though it's mostly crap. anyway, you can boost every signal in different ways, but if an incoming signal's too soft, it mostly also brings a lot of unwanted noise with it.. if you are going to boost the track, you are also boosting this hiss etc.

thanx dude i'll take that in consideration, it's just that i'm stationed at ft. gordon and the only music store around here has a no money back policy only a store credit. i just want to be sure that it is worth it.

if the preamp boosts the signal, why doesn't it also boost the hiss?

If it's a soundblaster it doesn't even rate because it won't even properly amplify a standard mic signal.
 
Try some of the online stores. Many are quite reputable and will take returns (although you'll have to box them up and ship them back).

Also, before you buy something, run it by the guys on this site. Generally you can find someone with the same thing who can give you an opinion on it. Takes some (not all) of the risk out.

Tex is right, forget the soundblaster's pre's. In fact, most of the better soundcards don't even have internal pre's.

i have the new soundblaster platinum xp that coms with a piece of hardware seperate from the sound card and plugs in through the cdrom drive. it comes with rca, fiber, and 1/4 inch jack ouputs
i hope this hook up satisfies me.
i also have an m tube preamp that was 129.00 dollars, the card was 220.00 dollars.
