Sidechaining for low end question ???

I was reading over the Michael Brauer article (AGAIN!) in the Sept/Oct issue of Tape Op (one of the most informative article I've ever read in any mag BTW) and at the end he mentions how he uses the internal sidechain on his Distressor(s) which allow the low end below 90hz to pass untouched, to keep the low end in tact (as he compresses more I assume).

If I were to use an RNC and sidechain an EQ for the same purpose of keeping a fat low end on, say a drum and bass submix group, would I want to pull down (cut) everything below the 90-100hz threshold (for instance) on the EQ, or boost everything above the threshold on the EQ????

My instincts tell me to pull the low end of the EQ down.

Cutting low or raising everything else has the same general effect -more sensitivity on the upper end, relative. (+/- headroom issues) You're just intercepting and messing with the detector/threshold balance. Sometimes you might want to do both.
