I am going to purchase one of the above. I got a chance to listen to both. The Shure seemed to have a little more "pop" while the Sennheiser seemed to be a little smoother. Anybody have any experience with Sennheiser's? The "expert" dude at the music store said the Sennhieser was the better bet (same price) because the technology was more up to date, and that Shure has the same technology as those 20 years ago. Any input?

Ya know what Ivan314? You seem like you're a real good guy. What I've decided to do is call my boss and tell him I need the week off. I'm renting a Mercedes convertible and driving down to Miami Beach. I'm going to book a nice little hotel room right on the beach, party down, and give the ol' SM58 vs E835 debate some real serious thought.

Gotdammit Hix, Im getting damn fucking tired of seeing you post suchnonsense....Im bout ready to whip your fucking ass...Quit posting nonsense outside of the cave....

whew! it's getiting hot in here.

Gidge- go to bed!

no wait that's not my line. :D

seriously.

Ivan, the technology not changing in twenty years for the 58 isn't a BAD thing. seems that would make the 58 the "safer" bet.
btw. what is the application?

I would be using it for vocals. I've tried to find the specs on the Shure but have been unable to find them at Shure's home page. For an entry level kind of guy like myself, is it worth looking at specifics such as frequency response, sensitivity, impedance, etc.? I'm not sure what each really means in practicality, but its just my nature to research before I buy.

Hixmix, enjoy your trip and take your time...

The SM 58 is a proven performer, every sound company in the world uses them (although not exclusively), this is because they are tough, reliable, consistent and they sound good. If you had a lot of money to spend on different mics I'd say give the Sennheiser a shot, but if you can only afford one mic why gamble, get the 58.

Sorry, I just saw this post.

I own both of these mics and use them both at shows. The Sennheiser needs more gain to sound at the same volume of the SM-58. But the Senn does have a very pretty smooth tone to it. I use the 58's for vocals, though because pushing the gain sometimes created feedback issues that I don't get when using the 58's. I think they are both good mics though.
So my advise is - softer music, the Senn is good. Louder music, stick with the 58.

Dang! I forgot this was a RECORDING site.

Just to let you know - I don't use either my Senns or 58's for recording. But if I had to, I would use the 58 because it is hotter, and you're not adding noise by having to crank the gain.

Thanks for the advice, I think I've decided to go with the Shure.

Hey Hard2Hear, how are things in the Nati? I'm a transplanted Cincinnati native roaming the east coast.

Man, things in Cincy are rough right now. There have been race-based riots and last I heard, the govenor was calling in the National Guard. There is a lockdown curfue after 8, so no fun in the city right now.

Wow, I hadn't heard all that about Cincy. Say, you wouldn't happen to be looking for anyone to collaborate with would you?

shure

I don't know for certain about the other but I have the shure and I like it-

The pickup seemed to be a little better than the senn when I tried them out. And I havn't really gotton the mic to break up yet either. But that's only limited exp. with it. The shure seems about indestructable too for live performances.

shure vs senn

don't forget you can play basketball w/the Shures and still use them as mics. if you look at the Senn funny it might break on you.

heard about the riots. man, that's rough. I was in Pittsburgh when Johnny Gammage was strangled to death for being a black guy in a nicer car than the cop owned, but 'burghers don't go beatin on each other for that stuff.

just got the Sennheiser e835 for $78 out the door! Anyways, it cuts through the mix MUCH better than my SM58, so it actually is perceptibly louder since I hear vocals better. Also, it is smoother in the sense that the mids are more clear and it captures the high end in more detail. Overall, it seems to capture more subtle details in vocals noticeably more than the SM58. Since I originally paid $100 for my SM58, I think the e835 was the best choice for under $100. I'll also be testing on bass drum and guitar...I'll post results if anyone is interested :).

i have and use both, and like all mics, which one is best depends entirely on the source. i know singers that sound like ass through the 835, and personally, i sound like worse ass through the 58. :D i can put an 835 up on one of the guys in my band, and it doesn't cut through the mix nearly as well as his 58. it's the opposite for me.

same goes for amps and even various guitars through the same amps--there'll be a source that one of them sounds better than the other on. same goes for snare drum, although generally i prefer the 835--seems to have a little more crack/sizzle to it. of course, it's real easy to dial that crack in on a 58 (or 57 or 545 relatives) with a little EQ, too, and i find that the 58's and relatives seem to take EQ (it sounds more natural to me) better than the 835 does.

i think the 835 is an excellent value for the money--picked both of mine up in excellent shape used for under $45 each, and i would also say the same thing about sm58s and the 545s i have (and really like). they're all good, solid performers for the little money they cost.

I'm recording with a stedman pop-filter 1.5-2 inches away from the mic and to me, the e835 just sounds more open whereas the SM58 sounds kind of muted. thanks for the input, let's keep breaking it down! :)

I bought my e835 at GC for $36 plus tax. It's a lovely mic, one that is different from and equivalent to an SM58. That means it will sound better on some voices, worse on others, but is always different. Bottom line-for the price of an SM58, I can buy 2 of the Sennheisers and have money left over. That won't help you if you sound better on the 58. And plugged into an Avalon, or a DMP-3, for that matter, I have not found the slightly lower output to be a problem.-Richie

There is a Beyerdynamic m69 on ebay right now going for the same price as the ones you are looking at. Grab it up. At $99, when (if, its doubtful you'll sell it) you ever decide to sell it, you'll probably get $99 for it. Its a better mic than either of those, IMO.

There are several new e845's going for the same price as a regular new 835, too, and that is also a better tighter patterened mic.

Save your bank for an extra 2 weeks and get an 855 and you'll find yourself much happier. Or a used 421 (or 431 if you can find one)

I read a review where they found the 855 to be overly bright, and the 845 to be the best of the lot.

YMMV.
