BTW is the SM7 and SM7B comparible???
Just picked up the Shure KSM44 for $425!
Just gotta say that my mic hunt is over!
Thank you for all your help!
I have 2 Apex 460 tube mics and I have tested the mics with my stock of about 50 compatible tubes. When I put in NOS, (new old stock), 5751's or JAN, (joint Army Navy), 12AT7's, they sound as silky and smooth as a Neumann, and I've had U87's, and U67's before. I bought the mics for about $200 each on Ebay and the tubes were about $15 to $20 each also on Ebay.
I also use 2 MXL V69XM's and with the better tubes, you'd swear they were $5000 mics.
The pre amps I use couldn't be farther apart in price and quality and the mics still kill almost everything else............I use a Nightpro PreQ3 through a Manley Electro-Optical limiter or a Behringer Ultragain T1953 tube mic pre with better tubes into an old Ashly SC-50 compressor. Either chain sounds awesome on just about everything!!!!
Just thought I'd let everyone know.

Did you use the KSM44 and 990 in the same recording space. If not then you may not get the same results that you think you will get with the KSM44. I've own and used plenty of mics in untreated areas and have never gotten the quality sound that I sought after. Then one day I finally decided to do acoustic treatment in my recording space and not only did my CAD m179, at4033, gt55, etc mics yield better results, but my very cheap CAD GXL2200 gave me very usable results on the right source. First priority should be a good room then a clean signal chain (decent preamp, don't have to expensive).
I'm actually not too worried about treating my room, used it and it sounds fine. I'm sure itll sound much better in a treated room but, I'm happy with my current results. I share a room with my fiance...where I live/record, and she WILL tear my head off if I glue foam on her walls!
Really? Even with the Apex 460's unbelievably crappy and veiled transformer and capsule with serious high end peaks?

If anything, the high frequency loss of the sucky transformer in the 460 probably tames the high end a lot....
That said, the high end on the U87 (or at least some U87s) is not exactly silky, so it wouldn't surprise me if it were of a similar level of non-silkiness....

The posted 87 curves are for a KH modded one. Not stock
Do you know what what was done to the microphone? did KH change/remove the high end EQ?
