CRAP!

I have a ton of gear, in fact I'll need to trim down a bit once I finish the studio room, as I just don't have the room. Anyway, that aside, I'm expecting most of the lithium batteries inside just about everything to be dead - and the gear won't remember any of its patches each time I power it up because of this. This was one of the reason why each and every device was attached to my laptop with a midi cable, and I sys-ex'd all the configurations, and named the files to match the brand/model/serial like so:

korg.poly800.1234567.sysex.mid

Because I know, they will all be dead. And at that point, I'll be buying pairs of AA batteries like they are free, and soldering on double AA holders to get the 3V. I hate those coin cell "soldered to the motherboard" batteries.

frederic... you know I'm just busting your jaw about your "various" projects..

Oh, I know, its entirely cool. I was busting back!

call it jealousy, as my studio at this location is still just a paper dream. The only things done are the 4 cement walls.

We have a baby on the way, so I'm in "panic mode" trying to get the larger, bulk purchases out of the way before my various project slush funds become part of the expected "baby fund". So far I've managed to keep it seperate, but I know if there is anything in that fund around ... say ... january, its getting sucked out of my pocket with a shopvac :)

Finishing the truck has about 5-6K or so including tools, so I need to do that now. Plus its not snowing yet :) The studio is a no-cost project for the winter, because I have everything I need. Wiring, connectors, TRS TT patch bays, solder, moulding, 409, screws, glue, three colors of paint, maple flooring planks, even a tongue and groove making machine (side planer). The only thing I actually have to purchase between now and when the studio is done having the gear loaded is rack screws. I had two coffee cans of screws and I lost both of them if you can believe that. Not sure how I did that. I even have the steel material and all the associated materials for the console table - all they way down to the fasteners and the rubber non-marring feet :)

Rack screws and some free time, thats it.

The truck project was on track until the engine (on my engine test stand) decided to spit parts in my garage. *sigh*. Made a spetacular bang though :)

Velvet Elvis: I think I remember seeing your studio in one of the recording magazines a while ago (Mix magazine??), but I'm not too sure. Your control room rocks -- I especially like how much natural light you have.

My control room in Mix magazine?

I don't think so :)

I'm very "small time" :)

So Bowisc, which gets more use?

Great River, John Hardy, Sebatron or the Speck for Vocals?

The Specks are ASC eq's not the pre's.

Hard to say since I just got the Hardy. But I will say that for acoustic guitars, the M1 will probably be my top choice.

Holy shite - I didn't realize you were building an entire new complex.

That place is going to be awesome..

How much longer until you are finished do you think ?
I just started sheetrocking this week.
I hope to be in there before the end of the year.

hi Bowisc,

1. I really like how your pictures turn out... what sort of camera do you use?

2. how do you interconnects all the rack gears? (don't see no patchbay...)

3. What happen to your roland e-drum pads? ;) (yes, I'm stalking you...)

Thank you.

Nikon Coolpix 5000 (which I'm selling), and a little tweaking.
I just swing the rack out and make any connections myself. No need for a patchbay yet, but I will someday.

Was too lazy to setup the Roland pads.

Very cool.

Cant wait to see the pics when its all done.
Me too. :D
I need to post an update at John's site showing how the A/C was all roughed-in, how the CR ceiling was framed, and a few other hurdles.

Michael - Yes, we NEED more pix. It has been kinda dry lately with the studio construction projects I've been yearning to see completed!! I need closure on the Carriage House and on MidiMonkey (as I'm sure both you and Frederic need, also!!).

Bowisc - Nice setup!! I enjoyed going through your website, also. It is always encouraging to see other Christian studio owners out there doing this thing that borders on an obsession (gotta be careful to keep the priorities in place.....). Where are you located geographically? Your pix only show a control room, so am I correct in assuming you are a one room facility?

Cheers,
Darryl.....

Thanks DDev.
I'm in NYC...

I do vocals, guitars, etc. in a 12' x 5' storage closet and it works quite well. I also have a another large room and access to my basement (my rig can go mobile in a three minutes) for things like drums, or when I want to record tracks with more "space". I try to work around my limitations as best as possible.

I actually have a graphic design studio that's working on my branding, stationary, business cards. The new site launches on Thanksgiving Day!

PTL!

NYC, huh? Bummer. If you were somewhere in the midwest I'd try to hook up with you sometime. I keep hoping that one of these days I'll have an excuse for getting down to Austin to see Michael's studio, but I'm waiting for him to finish it up!!

I do the vast majority of my recording remotely, mostly at church. I have a Mackie MDR that allows me to record 24 tracks anywhere I can get a feed. At church I have a patchbay setup with our Midas console that allows me to pick whatever 24 tracks I want off the mixer direct outs. This makes remote recording simple since I only have to haul my recorder around. If I feel the need to monitor what I'm recording, I haul along my 16 channel Tascam mixer. Back in the studio, I can then pull the external drive out of the Mackie and pop it into a drive bay on my studio PC and load directly into Cubase for processing and mixing.

At home, I really only have a small control room that is isolated. I hang a blanket across an adjacent space to simulate a vocal booth (this works OK as long as the a/c is off, the dog is not barking, and everyone in the house has been told to be QUIET). For tracking guitars and drums, I set them up in the family room adjacent to the studio and close mic everything. So far everything sounds great with the few groups I've worked with.

Well, enough about me.

Cheers,
Darryl.....
