Should I use Cubase? For my home studio I have very little gear as I do most stuff in a bigger studio on pro-tools. The home studio is just for me to mess around in, and record ideas that nobody will get to hear until I am 6 ft down looking up at them. I am using Vegas, but it is an old verison and I need to step it up a notch. I was looking at Cubase Se 48 tracks seems ok. What do you guys think? I have never even so much as looked at the program I know nothing about it.

Cubase SE as a good program ($100.00 is a no brainer :D ), I went from a Digi002 with pro tools LE (to limited for me) to SE, then I went to SL3 and up to SX3. Cubase is a rock solid program, I recommend the buy.

I've been using it for awhile and have nothing bad to say about it.

The only limitation is the 48 audio tracks (unlimited MIDI) and a restricted number of insert and VST instruments.

Nothing you can't do with it....

You might consider upgrading Vegas. I went from Vegas Pro 1.0b all the way to Vegas 5. Lots of improvements, and I have no reason to switch.

I might do that, because I know Vegas so well. That is the thing about software I hate so much. You have to re-learn every time you want to change. You spend more time working your way around a new program than actually working. Oh well, small price to pay for non-destructive editing!

I thought I read something about Se having limited outputs? Could I route the 48 tracks out of Se to a console on seperate busses?

With digital multitrackers, the default out is usually through a stereo bus. You can usually tell it how to route your outputs. This will depend on your soundcard(s).

I'm using a Delta 1010 and 2x Delta 410's for 12in/24out.

So I can send SE's 48 audio tracks to whatever busses I create and assign them to my soundcard outputs with no limitations? The way I read it, it sounded as if SE only had 2 physical outputs, I took that to be the master buss, and any other busses created to send a group of tracks to for effecting routed back to that master buss and couldn't be assigned to any old output on my soundcards.

CAn anyone clear this up?

SE has 8 physical outs (and ins for that matter).

If you wanted to output 48 seperate tracks to a console you'd need Cubase SL (128 physical ins/outs), SX has 256.

In response to the OP, I'm a very happy Cubase SE user.

I recently downloaded the demo for Mpowered Protools (Protools LE) and honestly, I was absolutely disgusted after using Nuendo. I suppose its whatever you get used to...but Protools LE just seems too childish for my likings. I think I'd rather have Garageband.

Just my opinion. Go with the Cubase lines.

I keep hearing people say PT isn't that great. Why not? Why is it still an industry standard then?

I've pondered that question too. Honestly, I don't know. Name perhaps?

If you have an m-audio interface, download the mpowered Protools LE and see for yourself.

Ultimately, I suppose its just a matter of opinion. I would like to see actaul data saying that Protools is the be all end all for the pro studio. That would be of a little more comfort to me than the guys at Sweetwater (which coincidentally is owned by AVID) telling me its the best.

The industry standard is protools HD (apparently). When people say 'protools sucks' they're generally talking about Protools LE. They're 2 different beasts.

Get it, you can always export your vst instrument parts as wav files and import them into pro tools later if you think the ideas are good enough, and if you get stuck on hao to use it there is always someone on here who'll give you a hand. :) good luck

well what's wrong with PT LE?

Compatability in a word. I thought about using it and realised how restricted I'd be with hardware. M-Powered goes some way towards addressing this but if you want to use PT then you still have to jump through too many hoops for my liking.

With cubase I can use whatever interface I want.

SE will only select ONE physical card and up to EIGHT physical inputs.

...at least thats my understanding

Wait for SE3, it's just coming with the same VST audio engine that is used in SL and SX ...
