I have been spending ALOT of time on here for a year or so. This place has been a great source of knowledge and hope for me. I have made a few friends on this site (and they probably dont even know i consider them friends). Thru my search on this site i have discovered their are 4 kinds of people on here.

1) venders: people who are here to sell recording related item's. these make up maby 5% of the people on here. This is not a bad thing(sometimes). They give knowledge and good deals. They help us get started and teach us to record. The bottom line thou at the end of the day they are here to sell products (indirectly)to make a living. I can not blame them for trying to make a living, but hey lets face it they have bills to pay and they need your money. This is not a friend its a salesman.

2)newbs: people who have come on here to learn to record. this is the biggest group. They make up 80% on this site. Most dont know what they want and expect you to tell them(spoon feed) what they need. Most of the stuff they cannot even tell you what it is used for, but they know they need it and ask "what should i buy". Half come here on a dream to get rich with what they think is a briliant idea. the other half want to record a hit and become rich. It is fun to watch the personality unfold. I myself fall into this group. Mine goes like this "I am stupid, but please dont tell me i am stupid I need your help"

3)Band hoppers: people who are here to plug their sound and promote their band. They make up 5%.Again, Its not a bad thing. they have done their recording and now they want to get the word out. These people put their band logo on the signature and post mant times hoping people will give them play time. They dont care about recording they just want to sell their band. I would do the same thing in their shoes. Most come and go(and alot get booted off quick) and plenty of them are rap stars.

4)social post hounds: people who dont even talk about recording but rather use this place as a chat room to pony up on the pezz. They make up 10%. These people scare the shit out of me. ANYONE WHO HAS OVER 20,000 POSTS AND HAS ONLY BEEN ON THIS SITE FOR 1 YEAR AINT RIGHT IN THE HEAD. I dont know if these people even have time to shower in day to day life for fear they miss a post. I bet money some of them do not have a clue or a care on how to record. I got to give it to them they are leaders(or at least trend makers). their main goal is to get a click of friends that think the way they do so they do not feel like outcast. They prey on " hey what is that. I wanna fit it and be a part of that". These people either "have made it" and have plenty of time on thier hands, or are to afraid to try, and decide to be king of the hill on HR.

So where do i fit in. Well i am a one year old newb who needs to shit or get off the pot. I have gear to record(and i do record), but yet i find myself always looking for more. I need better mic's, better this, better that,......whatever. I tried to get a job of of this site. I even said i was willing to move anywhere in the world to learn. I DO want to make pro quality work for my cartoon. If you skate with local kids you are a local skater. If you skate with the pro's you are a pro. I think the only reason i hang around is to feel like i am "skating with the pro's". In reality i am just hanging out with my computer. none of you know me or give a shit about if i make it or not. I could learn more in one week at a real studio than i could in a year on here.

What i NEED is free time to record and self teach. I wish i could get fired from my job and live off of unemployment for nine months to make my cartoon, but i have morals so i guess its not in my cards. What's this got to do with mics you ask. I started on the mic forum and i am going to end on it. I am leaving homerecording.com. the few hours i spend on here a day i am going to dedicate to recording. I may come back as a guest to look things up when i get stumped, but i am not going to post anymore. I am no pro so i should not give advice and anything i need is in the search button.

good luck to you all. may you find what you are lookng for.

You don't have to be a pro to give advice here, you just need to know something the person asking the question doesn't know.

Good luck with everything.

Wow, you are like some kind of True American Hero... sniff! You'll be... (*wipes tear from eye*) you'll be missed here, soldier!

A few points:

- This isn't a pro site. There are plenty of pros here, but there is no requirement to be anything like a pro here. There are plenty of pro site, and some of them (names not mentioned, but not PSW) suck eggs. They start talking about some topic, and inevitably it degenerates into a pissing contest over how good or bad their recordings are, sometimes accompanied by credits.

- A number of the most frequent social posters have some very good recordings. That would not include me :o

- Move down from the top group (Mics, Rack, etc.) down to Recording, Mixing, and MP3 clinic, and people talk very little about gear. Particularly the Clinic is the best place to learn, because until you post a clip, the advice you get, however good, will be generic.

Now off with ye, scurvy dog, or I'll keel-haul ya!

Your categories blow. :D

.....seriously though. Chill out and have fun with it. If you are learning stuff, just deal with the rest by ignoring it. Stupid and inflamatory people exist in all walks of life and on every bbs on the internet.

That is the truth. Advice maybe bogus or maybe golden, but the thing is you can try things and see for yourself. Bad advice is sometimes good to learn what not to do. And when the good advice delivers with good results "hip hip horeaa". I have only been on this site for like i dont know a half a year to a year, and I have learned a ton of things. I don't ever see leaving for what ever reason. It seems like record engineering, etc.. is an endless journey of learning for me. I may be stupid. I

So guy I would not leave. It would only hurt yo self.

Goodbye Cruel homerecording bbs

Toon,

On Daily Kos they call this a goodbye cruel kos diary. Please feel free to ignore your own post and rejoin us in the near future with questions or answers.

I, for one, have enjoyed your posts. Mainly because you are doing something different (voice-overs), than most of us (music).

Thanks,

Hairy Larry

Is that some kind of wart or new strain of something I should be wary of?
Or did you mean hooray?

P.S. Hang toon, good stuff here (albeit between the lines at times).

I fully understand the point of.... if you used your time spent just reading about recording.....and just record you will learn tons.... If you notice in my profile.... I have been here since 2000.... and just started posting here and there as of late.... I think I have a whole 50 or so posts LOL....I certainly hope you stop back every once in a while and show us what ya been up to .... use your time well and enjoy!

Agreed!
What about
5. The huge number of people who know tons and like to help without it being all about ego. these are the ones in the newbie forum who consistently say " let's not forget this is the newb forum, yes this has been posted a million times, here it it again". And tons of others.

It is easy to sift throguh the nonsense and get to good info and the occasional legitimately funny or interesting and thought provoking post.

All in fun, Garrett :D

@ Undergroundtoon

There is, also, another group of people...
6) People, like me, that likes audio and video, people that aren't a PRO, people that spends lots of money (I, myself, had spent more than 10,000 dollars in equipment) only for the pleasure of doing something to friends and public associations, without earning a penny!
If I were a PRO, with lots of experience... but I'm not! And this kind of forums are great for people like me.
I don't want to sell anything, I don't want to get a job, I don't want to promote myself... I just want to learn anything with people that has something to teach.
All of you that feel you have something to teach... must remain.
I hope to be forgiven for my "Portuguese" English.
Regards.

why is this in the equipment forum???

throw this in the dragon cave or something

Now if we could just get orksnork to leave.....kidding kidding....

toon, i hear what you're sayin and smell what you're cookin.

in many respects, i feel the same way. in many ways i feel that my skills, goals, budget and gear have progressed past much of that which gets discussed here. in short, a lot of the "usefulness" i used to get out of this forum has passed.

while at one time i really wanted to know "what $100 mic was the best for rap vocals" (:D), i'm past that now. i'm not looking at $100 mics or $300 monitors, etc. I'm looking at $1000 mics and $1200 monitors, etc., and unfortunately, there's just not a lot of that type (level?) of discussion going on here. or maybe in fairness, it IS going on.....it's just buried under a lot of discussions centering around "low end" stuff....and it's kinda tedious to sift through a lot of that to find the threads i'm interested in.

and unfortunately, there IS some condescension going on here (and i'm sure some will read some into this post).....which sucks, but it's no different than any other forum. Ever read any of the "Martin vs Taylor" threads on the UMGF? yikes!

i find myself reading and posting on Gearslutz a lot more these days, simply b/c the "level" is higher. i don't care about Nady or Apex or Behri or quite frankly a lot of the gear that's discussed here--in terms of price/quality/performance/etc, it's "below" where i am and want to be. I care about Apogee and Benchmark and Great River and a lot of the other stuff that's much less frequently discussed here (and much more frequently discussed there).

regardless, i feel that it's partly my duty to help others maximize their budget and potential b/c i was there once. just b/c you can make a great recording with an M147->Grace101 doesn't mean you *have* to have it in order to record......there are LOTS of nice recordings being made with SP B1's and VTB1's. go check out the mp3 clinic if you need proof. :D

plus this place has a lot of great folks (you know who you are), with the typical smattering of assholes thrown in (you know who you are too), and i just plain like hanging out with good people. it's like a support group in a lot of ways. :p

cheers,
wade

Looks like we need a high and mighty forum section. :p

i'm just kidding... I kinda see you guys point. I guess I come here to for learning and social reasons.

I get a kick out of reading the post where veterans are sarcastic in there replies. :D

I also get a kick out of getting other peoples perspective on things.

I dont think i come here with as many questions as I do just observing what people in the music community are talking about.

The problem that I have with the higher-end discussion where gear is the sole focus is that objectivity tends to go out the window. I mean it's not too hard to call a piece of gear crap if you've only spent $100 on it. Alternatively, if it's a good find, you will be unusually happy. But once you spend $3000 on something, too many people are hesitant to criticize it. Except Fletcher, but he don't come around these parts too much anymore ;)

Of course at the $3000 level you gotta hope there isn't much crap. So mostly you have different choices that are going to be hard to sort through on a discussion board. Like today I read a thread discussing the merits of various 1176 reissues, and there was not really a consensus opinion. I suspect that is somewhat typical.

I'll stick with the UAD 1176, that is the UAD-1 version ;)

Now if you are talking high-end techniques, that is a much more interesting discussion. Yeah, there is only a little bit of that here. Again, there are some real pros who can dish out the advice, but when the biggest limitation is the 8x11 bedroom, you are only going to get so far . . .
