Shelf EQ with DP-02CF?

Im needing some help learning how to use the shelf EQ on my TASCAM DP-02CF.

I have created a few mixes on it as they sound decent i guess you could say.

Anyway, Im not understanding what the owners manual is telling me.

Can anyone summarize what exactly the Shelf EQ does?
