hey guys, I need a bit of help getting my head around how to setup my friends music production equipment

okay, her setups is this;

MY FRIENDS SETUP
Music Computer (Mac)
Mbox
Yamaha Motif ES 6
MPC 2000XL

how would she incorporate her equipment so that they work well together, like so that the MPC can trigger samples via MIDI on her computer and she can then play her Motif and record the audio and MIDI from that as well?

does she maybe need a basic mixing desk or something like that?

thanks for any help

Midi Out from ES6 to Midi In 1 on Mpc
Midi Out from Mbox to Midi In 2 on Mpc
Midi Out from Mpc to Midi In on ES6
Midi Out from Mpc to Midi In on Mbox

Set the Mpc to master and everything else to slave this way you control everything from the MPC.

There are other ways to set it up in case you want the Yamaha to be the master controller or whatever program you have running on the Apple as the master controller I suggest picking up the manual and looking at the MIDI setup diagrams.

If you're really going to do anything to help your friend you're going to need to know what you're talking about, not just hook things up from a list...

Here are links to two good articles about midi basics that you need to read before you go any further. Part one and part two.

thanks for that.

The Mbox doesn't have MIDI IN though, I don't think :s

thanks for that.
The MBox does have a midi in. Did you read the articles on the other end of the links? Or were you just looking for a stopgap shortcut?

I should've guessed. What you've got there is an older generation Mbox which suffers from the severe handicap of having no midi ins or outs at all. That means that the ProTools version that came with it doesn't support midi either, so until you get a more reasonable --- and MUCH less expensive --- midi and audio interface for your friends computer, you will not be able to hook up the ES6 or the MPC.

I recommend either this which I use, or this which I've heard good things about.

As far as software goes, I use Tracktion. They are introducing Tracktion 2 next month, and I would recommend downloading both Tracktion 1 and the demo version of Tracktion 2.
