Hello,

I'm a new to the forum and I have a really simple problem that I'm hoping someone here will help me.

I'm trying to setup a Tascam 38 with a M-30 mixer.

I have two snakes hooked up going from outs to ins and vice versa.

I've been trying to test the 38 to see if it's recording.

I'm getting a signal through channel one and the meter on the 38 is responsive.

I've tried to record 2 minutes of mic checking and it looks like it recorded by I'm not getting playback.

When I playback the meter on channel one moves like the recording worked but I can't hear anything.

I'm using the monitor outs which work for hearing what I'm trying to record I'm just not getting audio on playback.

Do I need to re-route anything for playback?

I'm guessing I'm just an amateur making an amateur mistake.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Output select on the right of the machine. Is that set to repro or something else? Sync might also work so it's worth trying that too.

That said, if the needles are moving, it's more likely to be some wiring issue between the deck and the mixer. I don't have an M30 and I don't have any desks which have both input and output to the tape machine, so I can't really help you with that side of things.

First off Im not familiar with that mixer but I have a 38. The basic set up could be channel "direct out" or "tape out" goes from the mixer to the inputs of the 38. The 38 is a line only recorder (no microphone preamps) so you set the record level with the fader on the mixer (as Im sure you have figured out).
The line outputs of the 38 could go back into the mixer through 8 of the line inputs. If you do it this way, then when its time to listen to the tape, you select each channel you want to hear by switching that channel on the mixer to line in (as opposed to mic in). Then route those channels to the stereo buss and monitor the stereo buss on the control room monitors (speakers).

Thanks for the reply guys. I think I'm getting it sorted out. I can record and I'm getting audio now through the headphones. It's quiet and the signal doesn't seem to be affected by the fader that controls each channel. I'm guessing it's a routing issue. I'm going to try to get a longer/louder recording on it and see what happens.
