ok ill digest what you said properly and have a play, thank you

Ok, so I been playing.

I have the 8 ADAT inputs going into 1-8 channel inserts at "half click" mode and 8 ADAT outputs going into the 9-16 channel line inputs.

However, for some reason panning the recorded signals coming back through 9-16 dont work?

I have no buttons deppressed on the channel strip:

got hold of a manual and been reading, it quotes:

"All models have line inputs connected by internal wiring to the corresponding tape input. Eg. Model 168 line inputs 1 to 8 recieve the same programme as tape inputs 1 to 8. When you plug a different source into these line inputs the internal connection from the tape input is switched off"

So, armed with this info theorectically I should be able to put 1-8 tape outputs (XLR - jack) to the ADAT input and 1-8 tape inputs (jack - jack) to the 1-8 ADAT outputs. When the recorded signal comes in through the tape input it *should* appear on the corresponding channel 1-8? where i can then mix away, pan, eq etc etc

Am I correct with this assumption?

Yes - this was the "inline" mechanism I was mentioning earlier.......
