Just wanted to pass on some info/opinions (FWIW, based on my ears) on the Sennheiser E609 Silver mics....tried a pair on rack/floor toms at a live show, was "very" happy with the sound (as was the drummer) ...clear, defined and all the other buzz words...took them back to the studio the next day....blew me away on my studio kit (Pearl Sessions), in fact I ordered a third, as my floor tom is a 14" (tuned down) and this mic seemed to be even nicer on this than the previous nights' Pearl Masterworks 16" floor (I've been using an EV RE20 or sm57 up until now).

Just for kicks, I brought along one of the E609's to last weeks show, and replaced my usual sm57 on guitar cab (Hughes and Kettner 2-12 closed back)...at sound check, from front of house, bassist and second guitarist commented "what had I done to the guitar sound"...finally had the cabinet sound on stage "out front"...I went out myself (they "never" say anything like this, ever)... I don't often get overly excited about this stuff, especially live, and rarely would spend the time to pass on the info, I realize someone (everyone) else might think it sounds like ass, but I doubt I will ever mic up this (or maybe any other) guitar amp/cabinet with anything else...at the least, it's my new "first try" mic for this application...it just sounded great...very real, whatever preset I sent (clean, overdrive, compressed) it was head and shoulders above my previous mic'd sound. Almost had a "very" slightly compressed sound on its own on clean sounds (no compression anywhere in the chain) which was a good thing.

Anyway, take this for what it's worth...I also bought a Sennheiser E602 for kick (studio use only) at the same time, I could go on and on about it as well ( and I still really like my RE20 for kick) but I knew ahead of time the 602 was great from previous use, so I wasn't as surprised as I was by the 609's...these are just great mics, and not just for the $....BTW, 421's we're my original choice, but I was drawn to the flat style of the 609...easier to keep out of the way for drummers with "bad aim"...get a lot of those in here :(

Thanks for reading, if you think I'm FOS, don't tell me, I already know!

I picked up my silver in the middle of a session, so I haven't tried it on anything other than a Dual Rectifier - which it killed on - and a clean Mesa combo - which was pretty sweet.

I'm glad to hear you liked it on drums as well, because I plan on using it there too.

Look for my reviews... I have a black one and a silver, they are different. I use my silver for something every session.

this is the reason why i love sennheiser mics. they are awesome!

Used it on a marshall cab and it was pretty nice. It beat out my 421 for the particular track. Tried it on snare and it didn't seem "fast" enough compared to a 57.

Tried singing through it at a rehearsal and it sounded like shit by itself but seemed more than okay with the band playing.

It seems like a pretty decent mic for less than $100.

I would really like to know what an old one sounds like. I saw an old video of the Doobie Bros on VH1 Classics and they were all singing through them. Daniel Lanois sings through one on his recent tour.

Cheers, RD

The old gold MD-409's sound fantastic. That mic fetches twice what it was new, these days.
The new Silver edition is supposed to be in line with the sound of the 409. It could be close, but its not quite as good. THe black 609 sounds nothing like the 409 at all. I have one of each. At $100, the 609 silver is a great buy. Why not?
Highly recommended.
