The ones on ebay, are they the discontinued ones?

What is the designation, just "e609" as opposed to "e609s"???

So are they worth the extra $, and are they still useful mainly on guitar cabs and toms?

My 609's are the gold ones. They are definately more like the older 409's and 509's than the new silver ones. The silver ones still sound pretty nice though. They just don't seem to have the same warmth in the low mids and lack a little (compared to the golds) in the extended top end. That doesn't make them better, just different. The new silvers are a little more 57ish I guess.

The e609 silver rocks...but so does the 609...just in a different way.

How little, as in... if I already have a 57, will I get enough of a different "flavor" to justify spending $90???
I'm not cheap, I'm poor... there is a difference :D

Yes, I think you will hear a difference. I have both 609's and 57's. A lot of people on this forum don't like 57's and love 609's. For me, i am glad I have both because sometimes one just seems to fit more than the other. The 609 is one of those cheap mics that we could all benefit from having at least a pair of:)

Yes, you'll notice a difference. The e609s is much "tighter" sounding to me... more defined, with a less-pronounced midrange bump, and a smoother top end. I have both, and like them for different things. I'm particularly partial to the E609S on "clean" Tele's and Strat's.

hmmm, what about filthy-sludge-infested Epi's?

I can't speak for Epi's, but I will say the E609S sounded spectacular on a Gibson SG-X with the super-hot (and distorted) 500 series pickup, going through a JCM 800 series 50 watt half stack. ;)

The older E609's are black on both sides and have a different capsul along with a flatter response than the silver version. There was a guy on Ebay selling them for 129.00.......I bought 2 of them. (I think he's raised the price now to 149.00)

Rick

What do you mean Gold? The original 409's are the ones that are considered "golds" since they have a gold (brass) screen on one side and black on the other, and those are by far the superior of the black and silvers. If you actually have golds, then those are the 409's, and probably the best rock guitar mic ever made.
Golds were $225 new about 5 years ago, last time I saw some on ebay they were grabbing $350 and up for used ones. Crazy.

I have 2 609's that each have one gold grill and one black grill. I know that don't sound as nice as the older 409's. The older 404's sound better to me than the newer 604's as well. However, for the price, the new ones still work pretty well. As for the best rock guitar ever made, not so sure about that. Have you tried a Royer R121 yet? Of course a 409 is still quite a bit cheaper though, and a little less scary to throw out on a stage, and the flat design makes it really nice for if you are short on stands and just need to drape it over the cab:D

My apologies to everyone. My 609's are black on black and my 409's are black on gold. These all live in one of my live mic boxes that I haven't used in a while. Been in the studio mostly for the last little while. My bad:D
