P'haps a thread could be booted up about sidechaining etc. I've no clue either. Mind you squashing & pumping sound a bit extreme.
Yeah the real key is to figure out how to "Key" the compressor with one sound and have it compress the other
if you have a sidechainable vst you just have to figure out how to get the "keying" track into it to cause it to engage on the track you want to compress
That seems to be the bigest variable within DAWs as to whether track to track routing can be done or if you need to do it though using multiple busses and duped tracks. In ACID it was fairly compex but (From what I was reading) Fairly similar to how you would do it with hardware. It could be a lot simpler on other DAWs if you are able to route sounds from one track into the VSTs on another
