Anybody have any idea how a pair of 603s or NT5s would fare on about 3-4 feet on either side of a 12 gauge shotgun to capture the sound of it firing?

I think you'd capture the sound better if you put them in an XY pattern directly in front of the 12 ga.
jk...I read that a 12 gauge spl is 155 db at peak if that helps.

Thanks man. I should've looked that up. Now to figure out how much the SDCs can take. Maybe I'll have an update over the weekend.

I remember trying to record just the cocking sound back in the early 90's using my Shure unisphere and soundblaster card. Didn't sound very good. Just got a new Mossberg for the wife, so maybe I should re-record that sample.

You can always attenuate the SPL with distance. But if you have to be that close, how about a couple dynamics like SM57's? Condensers will likely exceed the SPL rating fairly quickly. Not to imply unusable results given the short lived peak. Unless you're firing it in a parking garage, or other closed space with poor acoustics. I suppose you could also go with custom rounds with half powder, but where's the fun in that?

Once you record the blast and if your not happy with it just try to down load a free ware sample. I've heard some good ones.
