Stand Up Comity
I've had trouble stripping out the heads of phillips screws.

Should I counterbore the holes for the little screws on the machine heads? One bit for the threads and a bigger one for the shank?

Is there a really good line of screwdrivers that grip better?

Buy better screws, pre-drill, and get the right size screwdriver. You should never strip a screw.

man I saw an ad on TV for a device that will remove these screws. it was like 9.95 and I almost ordered it on the spot and of course now I dont remember what it was.

Well, for cryin' out loud...

Wikipedia said:
The Phillips screw drive has slightly rounded corners in the tool recess, and was designed so the driver will slip out, or cam out, under high torque to prevent over-tightening. The Phillips Screw Company was founded in Oregon in 1933 by Henry F. Phillips, who bought the design from J. P. Thompson. Phillips was unable to manufacture the design, so he passed the patent to the American Screw Company, who was the first to manufacture it.

Sears/Craftsman sells a set of bits to remove stripped screws.
Or you can GRAB IT!

Drill the right size pilot hole, get the right sized driver, add a tiny bit of candle wax to the thread. Helps put them in and get them out years ahead. If you are stripping heads you have the wrong sized pilot hole or the wrong driver, possibly both. Those screws should go in easily.

Test on scrap of the same timber to get the pilot the right size.

Deck Mate coated decking screws with anti camout ribs in the head, with their special phillips bit.

If you can strip one of those things out you are a better man than I! :D

Oh - is this for guitars? ;) :p :D

I can shear them does that count.

decking screws in a guitar hmm

I love these Deck Mate decking screws. I use them for most of my home construction projects. They make an incredibly strong joint, particularly since it is so hard to strip the head. You actually have to watch out for burying the head too deep and splitting the wood, even if you countersink. Especially with harder woods.
