Screw Tip.. Very, Very Important.

Ok, well not that important, but you will save some money...


I bought a fancy Rack to hold all my gear at a Music store in my area.... It was a floor model and didn't come with any screws, and I basically got it for nothing......

I had the music store order me in some screws to set all my gear up in the rack...

I got 50 screws in a neat little package and they were $26.99 CDN ($16.99 USD, (Roughly))

So that was a while ago....


Now this past week, I found myself needing screws again, as I lost that expensive little bag of screws when I moved...

My shop deals with a Nut and Bolt distributer called "Nut and Bolt Supply"

Went there and picked up 100 screws! for $7.99 CDN... thats like $4.00 USD....

You can get them at any industrial nut and bolt distributer... and they will most likey give you a bag of plastic washers for them for free..

The moral of the story..... Well you figure it out.
 
Good tip Sir. I've been rolling my own for years. Standard rack screws are 10/32. Something else folks can do is to pick up a tap set with a drill bit. You can put a tapped hole anywhere you need one.
 
Can a person tap his bunghole?... I was just thinking how handy it would be to screw in a drainplug now and then ... :D
 
Ok... Here's more.

If you need replacements for plugs, need jacks, want to make cable etc.... Don't get them at your music shop either, get them at an electronics supplier. And don't take one of those really small shops. Maybe even get them online with farnell or something like that.

It's kindof the same as with the plugs.

However, Neutriks will be expensive anywhere. I bought some fake-neutriks at the music shop anyway, because they got some good quality plugs at half the price of neutrik. If you get cheap stuff at the electronicsshop, it really is cheap stuff.

What about the wooden coat hangers... not the type that stands up, but the type you screw into the wall, and has about 4-6 wooden pegs sticking out.........

Hang the cables you aren't using on it... 1 peg for Midi, one peg for inserts, one peg for mic cables... etc....

You need the "ANAL INTRUDER" with the kung fu grip. In Australia, be sure and get the left hand thread.

I would have hoped the screw thing would be common knowledge but maybe not. Never buy any common items at a Music or Specialty Computer store. Screws, AC Cables, Power Strips, etc.
 
Yeah... what's great is that we have a computer store here in town that literally THROWS AWAY all of their extra power cords. They've got boxes of hundreds of them (right angle, extra long, black, grey, white) etc that they just say "help yourself".

Get some hex wrench screws so that band mate of yours won't keep "borrowing" your DAT deck when you aren't looking.

I use Allen head or Torx screws for my rack.. Philips head are shit... they just strip.....

Another good tip... dont pay through the nose for microphones at the music store just head down to radio shack for a bargain.....

GREAT Tip... Man... I've been spending all this money on mics... I should have just gone down to the local Radio Shack...

Of course, I probably would have spent a fortune buying 1/8inch to XLR adapters :)

Isn't it also true that if the microphone has a built in on/off switch that it makes it sound better? ;) :p

Also... forget mic clips... just use duct tape. If you're getting handling noise or vibration noise from the mic stand, its obvious you haven't used ENOUGH duct tape. :o

Oh, absolutely!!!

True story here......I needed MIDI cables. I went into Radio Shack to get some. I asked for MIDI cables. The guys said, "Here's some 5-pin DIN cables."

I saw that there were cables labeled "MIDI cables" right next to them. I asked him what the difference was. He said, "About five dollars."

I kid you not. The exact same cable was being sold at two different prices, both Radio Shack labeled stuff. The only difference at all is that for 5-pin DIN cables, there was only one color, a kinda blah grey. The MIDI cables were in black, though there was a multi-pack of colored ones that I bought because they were very short (only 3 feet long) and the color coding is helpful for use with my rack.

And speaking of racks.....

I got my rack for $15 a two hours of driving. It's an old ham radio equipment rack, 20 units. Unfortunately, the screw holes in it are something bizarre, so I have to use washers and backing nuts to get a tight fit. But otherwise, it's great. It's steel, it's on casters, has a back door.....did I mention it's steel?

So of course I painted it purple. Here's a picture:

What are these screws made of, gold? looks like somebody is screwing you all. If have hunderts of these 19" rack srews laying around, and I don't even recall how I got them. I'm sure I never paid for them. There the normal black ones that are used everywhere for professional 19" rack systems. If I had to pay for these things I'd be broke by now. I guess I just got them from the company that build all of our racks, and the local music stores. I'm using them for more than e decade and have never ever paid for them.
