ear art's not a science
Ok, I went out and bought a new soundcard, and midiman delta audiophile 2496 on the recommendation of many on this site. I have been using a soundblaster audigy platinum and want to continue to use it for the onboard soundfont capability with midi. Yes you are all right, the audiophile is cleaner for audio, less transient noise. However it seems that finding an optimum configuration which allows the two soundcards to work in sonar 2 without conflict is a little elusive as I spent a couple of hours playing with configurations just to get the 2 to work together at all. So my question/need is, does anyone use these two soundcards together who has figured out how to get them compatible. Heres what I've run into. If I load "all" the drivers for output in sonar then only audigy 1/2 3/4 5/6 show up. If I just load audigy 1/2 I get the 2496 as an election. Also there is the helicopter sound in all but 2 of the audiophile outputs I guess this is related to the clock crystal. Very frustrating :( So if youv'e got these two cards working together peacefully, I truly respect the time and research that you put in to get it that way. Would you please take the time to share your knowledge it will be greatly appreciated. I'm using xp and sonar 2 .

Are you using WDM drivers for BOTH cards?

Sounds to me like one of your cards has WDM drivers, but the other has only MME drivers. You need to use the same type of drivers for both cards.

A workaround, if you don't need WDM drivers, is to check the box for Use Only MME Interface in the Options > Audio configuration.

Why do you need the 3/4 and 5/6 outputs? 1/2 are the Audigys main output, 5/6 is the rear output and 3/4 is mixed mono from 1/2 and 5/6.

As long you only play soundfonts, you only need 1/2 cause soundfonts won't play on any other output...

Thanks for the feedback Guys here are the answers to what you asked.

dachay2tnr ..... Are you using WDM drivers for BOTH cards?
reply: yes both are set to wdm

reply: I was using one output to a set of powered speakers to monitor what I am doing and for general computer sound. The other output I had patched into my PA's input for playing through. Yes when I wanted to hear midi through the pa I had to move the inputs around. But now I have to move them just to change from computer monitor to any pa input. its a pain but bearable. I guess I was hoping to keep as many inputs/outputs available as possible. Is sonar limited to 3 outputs?

Is sonar limited to 3 outputs?
No, only limited to the amount of outputs your soundcard(s) have, and you can create as many Virtual Mains you want.

Maybe you should invest in a small mixer. Behringer has some small ones...

I have a SBLive (for soundfonts) connected to Audiophile via SPDIF and a Behringer mixer for patching/monitoring. The whole combination works fine. You may want to disable Audigi audio functions in Sonar since you'll be only using it for midi. Make sure you have the latest drivers and no IRQ conflicts. The only limitation of this arrangement is that Audiophile is synced @48 kHz via SPDIF, hence all your projects will have to be at 48 kHz. To avoid it, you may connect Audigy to Audiophile via mixer.
