You guys crack me up!

Pretty much every player mentioned here has something to offer. A lot of what I've seen here has as much to do with personal taste as ability.

Here's a few I haven't seen yet:

Frank Marino: The phsycodelic blues-rock shredder. Yeah, some of you may think he's just a Jimi clone. I suggest you listen to more than the covers.

Pat Travers: This man has more feel in one solo than most guys have in their entire catalog.

Joe Perry: Name one modern player that hasn't stolen riffs from this man.

Glenn Tipton/K.K. Downing: arguably the best two-guitar team of all time.

Micheal Schenker: Another one of the all-time great three-finger shredders.See Frank Marino. And feel too.

Dave Mustaine: talk about phrasing......

Jerry Cantrell: Note choice, note choice, note choice!

Alex Lifeson: Chords, chords and more chords!

Billy Gibbons: Go ahead, play your solos with a quarter or a peso (whichever is handy).

Flame away! :D

Oh man..... I get chills everytime I hear "On and On"! And "Captain Nemo"... wow! He was a very unique player that just kind of ended up sitting next to Uli Roth in the Scorpions recycle bin.

I don't know, I have always been fascinated with Mick Mars from Motley Crue, he just puts soo much feeling and emotion when he hits the whammy bar in "Girls, Girls, Girls"..

schenker was a master, 'into the arena'...nuff naid. he's in my top ten all-time faves. mathias jabs could play his ass off too.

Interesting thread. I saw Steve at Toad's Place in New Haven, CT, which is a pretty club-like setting. He played for over two hours, and by the time it was done, I was dying to get out of there. I felt like I had just spent 2+ hrs. watching Steve Vai play every possible combination of notes that could ever exist. I was exhausted by it! Overall, I've tended to listen to Steve more than Joe, finding him to be a bit more inventive and unique, but lately I've been finding a lot of his stuff to be annoying and lacking of good hooks. ALien Love Secrets is his best, IMO.

Eric Johnson. He won a fucking grammy.

How about Eric Johnson? I saw Him with Vai And Satch at the G3 tour and the big jam in the end it was Eric who blew away both of those guys.

And that would just be the beginning of the real players.....

Naw!

Those 2 are too artificial; I say Trower and Stevie Ray put those boys to shame. Every 5-10 years, a new guitar God has to be created. On my planet; I do not elect a new God every few yrs!

Carlos

On which song?

I'm happy to see that people aren't singing praises all about Carlos Santana in this thread about great guitarists. Carlos may feel every note he plays with his soul, but there's something sour and well, lame, about his playing and it bothers me that he gets guitar hero status.

Vai and Satch are apples and oranges to me. I find Satch a lot more listenable in the long run than Vai mainly because he goes for memorable hooks and phrases as opposed to the 'out there' arty direction Vai goes for. I agree that Satch played a lot more widdly scales in the past (not a bad thing) but you have to agree that he took a major step forward musically with "Strange Beautiful Music" (great production too)... although I thought he went majorly backwards with atrociously titled "Is There Love In Space"...

If you like real melodic stuff that has elements of shred and neo-classical, check out 'Paradise Lost' by David Valdez - it's one of the best instrumental cd's I've heard in a long time. Do a search for him on youtube or listen to the samples on guitar9.com

Some players that I would rather listen to over Vai or Satch any day include;
Jason Becker
Marty Friedman
Vinnie Moore
Steve Morse

It's all entirely subjective anyway, some guys think BB King is the best player - I certainly don't, but maybe some day I will if I ever grow out of shred.

The overuse of the phrase "apples and oranges" on this site is driving me insane.
Let's try a new one - how about penises and vaginas, just for some childish humor. Here - I'll try it first:

Vai and Satch are penises and vaginas to me.

HAHAHAHAHA! Isn't that a lot more fun????? :D

Well Vai is very outrageous with his solos and overly complex with some of his arraignments. Satch has catchy hooks and grooves and yes he is more commercial but his song structure makes more sense then some of Vai's stuff. Vai does infact record more complex solos and song then Satch and Vai records, produces, writes and sings all by him self. Satch sux at singing, he doens't record his own, nor produce. Now keep in mind that one of Vai's biggest influences was Frank Zappa and Zappa was a bit odd with his music. Both are extremely knowlegeagble of music theaory, Steve is actually a Doctor of music now... so you may call him Dr. Vai; literally! Anyway, it's really comparing apples and oranges... Music is all about the individual who can appreaciate what they can find from a musician, ppl find a connection to one thing but not the other, and visa versa to the other person. Look, music is not a science, it's an ability.

If Stevie Ray Vaughn was not taking a dirt nap he would be somkin every ones ass but since he is no longer with us Vai is Da man IMO.

I wonder if the OP ever learned how to spell Vai correctly. It has been 5 years, after all! :D
