Satriani or Via?

I picked Vai based on the fact that Satriani is a major dickwad to the people that go to the clubs to see him...and I also like how Vai kinda broke from the Musician's musician thing with his work in David Lee Roth's band and the movie crossroads.

every reply posted is subjective and mine is no different. personally, i like stariani's style and tone better but feel that vai is technically a better player. i've never cared for vai's tone.

i've been playing for 27 years and i came to the conclusion a long time ago that there is no "best". we can only hope that the next one to come along will be different. ;)

Im about new age guitarists, namely...Omar Rodriguez-Lopez of The Mars Volta...hes sickly amazing....and the reason i got into guitar playing.

However, if i had to choose Vai or Satriani, i'd go Vai....based on the fact he played guitar in the Halo theme...haha. Stupid? yes, however, it is awesome.

G'day Roguetitan,
Don't be upset - plenty of others have offered you the comfort of agreeing with you.
If I want shredding I get a cheese grater (pun intended).
SRV plays really, really well but is too much in thrall to Jimi.
Joe & Steve, superb technicians that they are, are like the fine detailed icing on a wedding cake - initially impressive, not as tastey as that 1st impression suggests and finally, lacking the depth flavour, texture and body of the cake beneath the icing - in other words not satisfying.
How about Roland S Howard, Deniz Tek or Buddy Holly?

O I was just hacking on ya:D
those are all good musiciansin their own right.

i would pick Satch for his broad array of styles......and inovations of whammy bar abuse. Joe always seems to have a bit more grasp on guitar styles, and incorperates them all into his own........plus his tone is very vocal like and raw.

Steve, on the other hand......is better player in a sense of "strangeness" and originality. His tone isnt the greatest........and he is a musical genius (notice i didnt say guitar genius). he doesnt use different styles in the way Joe does, and seems to have found his own style, and only plays that style.

+1 for joes tone and wide array of styles

+2 or steve cause he is a mad man trapped in a guitar players body
