Actually, I don't find it that bad, other than being overly loose and rambling.
We'll take that as a compliment. It was a loosely put together online jam that evolved from the bass track I had recorded.

I'll post the bass track on its own so you can get an idea from which the others players worked from in order to build something from nothing.

I'll be back

I can play like a motherfucker.

Samples please.

I'd have to assume that you can really jam if you're going to make such bold statements, and I rather enjoy great guitar playing even if the guitarist is a complete __________.

An enjoyable listen.

Yeah, the mix is out of balance, shy of low end and the drums sound like the track is out of sync by maybe 100 ms, but it conveys a good performance regardless. But that's the beauty of home recording... despite the imperfections any of our work may sometimes have, if it conveys the feel of the song - a song you wouldn't have heard otherwise, big F'ing deal.

60's, I've heard several of your mixes and I suspect that something is boosting the low end in the way you hear it in the room. I'd bet that if you can adjust for that your mixes will come across as well balanced.

Here’s the Bass track for “Sail Away”.

What happened was is that my daughter (living in Boston) popped in for a visit to show me the Warwick Rock Bass guitar she had purchased. She left the guitar with me for a few hours while she went to visit a few of her friends. I plugged it in and recorded the track inside of 30 minutes. I posted it in the New Rep Point Thread and some mighty fine players took it from there.

Sail Away Bass Track

Everyone should feel free to grab the file, run with it as they see fit and jam.

I love the music.....!..(looking past and thru the technicalities involved with it.)
I've always liked this song, even the original from way back when.
If there are any future changes in the mix, I'd love to hear them.
Great world-wide collab guys!!
And that's what it's all about.
Spit.

The song, it aint bad....Randy made a bum mix. No big deal....It happens. Time to not get too personal....

Sorry Madz, but the hearing problem I'm having is obviously worse than I thought or I was fatigued.

I still think I did a better job of mixing the guitars as compared to the original disc that I sent you. Pop it and give it a listen for a comparison.

Does Ford Van and Jake write HangDawgs' reviews for him? :D:D:D
What are you monitoring through? Those drum tracks are suffering from more than just ear fatigue and hearing loss above 11k.

I have my suspicions also and I'm struggling to get a handle on it. The hearing loss doesn't help matters, but I beginning to think that I have do have a problem withing the room also.

I recently ran a half assed analysis of my room at the listening position with an SPL meter strapped to a mic stand:

Pink Noise - 70 dB
30 Hz - 53 dB
40 Hz - 66 dB
50 Hz - 70 dB
60 Hz - 70 dB
100 Hz - 68 dB
125 Hz - 76 dB
250 Hz - 77 dB
400 Hz - 73 dB
800 Hz - 70 dB
1000 Hz - 70 dB
1250 Hz - 71 dB
2500 Hz - 77 dB
3150 Hz - 76 dB
4000 Hz - 74 dB
5000 Hz - 76 dB
6000 Hz - 73 dB
7000 Hz - 75 dB
8000 Hz - 73 dB
9000 Hz - 72 dB
10,000 Hz - 68 dB
11,000 Hz - 71 dB
12,000 Hz - 71 dB
13,000 Hz - 68 dB
14,000 Hz - 66 dB
15,000 Hz - 61 dB
16,000 Hz - 62 dB
17,000 Hz - 60 dB
18,000 Hz - 56 dB

The meter could hear the frequencies I highlighted in red, but I couldn't hear the tones unless I boosted the volume dramatically.

I think I learned something about my room. Perhaps I should send the info to Ethan Winer and get his opinion. I would trust his judgement implicity.

What I did learn mostly is that the older I get....the less I'm able to hear as a result of abusing my eardrums....and getting older.

Frequent use of reference recordings, IME, is invaluable. It's a matter of reference points, not absolutes. But bass trapping can solve a lot of low end emphasis monitoring issues, which may be happening here.

I wouldn't sweat the loss of hearing above 11K...I'm down to 20% TOTAL hearing in my right ear, and I'm shelved at about 8K in my left ear, but I can still mix with a bit of compensation through large amounts of volume, lol. There's not much besides hiss above 11K, and that's not the problem with this mix. To me, the drums are off time-wise...seems to be consistently off, so it may just be an alignment issue instead of a performance issue. They have no ass whatsoever, though, and I've heard Madz' drums before, and they don't usually sound that vacant, so that's a mix issue.

How many drum tracks did you get? I find that to start with, a good GENERAL guide is to make the kick and snare roughly the same volume in terms of the meters. The peaks of each should be pretty close, even though the snare will be more apparently loud. It's hard to say what happened with the drums without knowing what you got and what you did with them after you got them, but I'm with Greg...don't worry about hearing loss above 11K...most people have to turn that shit waaaay up to hear it.

What are you monitoring through? Those drum tracks are suffering from more than just ear fatigue and hearing loss above 11k.
I monitor through Carvin SRS monitors when I'm working with my DAW and I monitor with Altec Lansing when I monitor from the PC. My soundcard isn't top notch either, so there may be an issue with that also, but more often than not the mixes sounded near equal in the past.

I'd like to think that this thread can be of help to me to sort out the problems I'm facing regarding my room and my ability to hear things.

Both Llarion and LemonTree have the tracks that I mangled and they will be remixing those tracks. I'm just as interested as anyone is to read comments about their mixes and also discover for myself whether or not I can hear a difference when I listen to what they do with the tracks.

In the meantime, HangDawg can stay tuned and maybe learn a thing or two. :)

I trust his judgement implicity too....till i add up the construction cost:eek::eek::eek: naw its probably not that bad.

what monitors are you using? do you use two pairs of monitors to a/b the mix(so your not mixing to a speaker.....but the mix itself)

....I am with you thou, that test says the room needs help;)

to late....who is the slow boy now:(:p:p

i spaced out to the tv....

Samples please.

Not really my fight, but HangDawg's been posting "samples" of his work here for six years, and while he may not have posted any in the whopping 6 weeks since you've been here, the search function should help you out. I know he utilized all the tact of a nuclear warhead in this thread, but he probably felt like there was enough ego stroking in this thread. Anybody who listened to the mix I listened to and thought it was good to go needs to have either their hearing or their honesty level checked. It's not a crime or anything, and I'm all about being as polite as possible in the mp3 clinic, but before you call somebody out, you might do a little research into how much they've contributed to the community instead of judging their ability and/or their character by 2 posts. I won't do that to you.

most dictators put in a lot of work before they start committing mass genocide..............does that make them a good dictator?

all i know is he was an asshole today:rolleyes:

Agreed.

In a way, any time a person listens and types up a comment, however gruffly worded, it's a good thing. How the OP reacts to it often has more impact on the total meaning than the comment itself.

What difference does it make how many years HangDawg has been here? For someone who says "not really my fight", Chris, you appear eager to jump on HangDawgs bandwagon to criticize a collabration amongst friends that True and I share in common. Everyone is free to say what they will about about me, my lack of talent, mixing skills, etc. I do not, however, appreciate the negative commentary toward the folks who collaborated with me on this song. It was a collaboration amongst friends and nothing more than that.

You're losing crediblity by the day here, Chris, especially when you refuse to leave well enough alone and bring Cave crap and anomosity to the Clinic.

Anybody who listened to the mix I listened to and thought it was good to go needs to have either their hearing or their honesty level checked.
I made clear the hearing issues that I am experiencing. Perhap you missed that bit of info because you don't read every post.

I really can't comment about whether or not HangDawg has made positive contributions for the past 6 years. I've only been here for 4 years and I don't read every post and I admit I rarely contribute anything of worth. I can only respond to the negativity within his posts within this thread.

I won't do that to you.
Day late...dollar short.

I *did* do research, and none of the clinic posts I found still have valid links. When someone proclaims he can play like a motherfucker, I want to hear it. I wasn't kidding about that. And while it's true I haven't been here but six weeks, I don't need any more time than what it takes to read a reply to know it's out of line. I thought that crap was for the cave?

As far as my positive comment, that was for the song itself. I wasn't even listening through monitors, not that it probably would have mattered much in my case.

If I run across something here I don't like, I keep it to myself. If I hear something that I can comment on, I do my best to be constructive. There was a lot of constructive criticism in this thread and he could have gotten his point across without being a complete shithead. Constructive criticism inspires people to get better, being a dick is just being a dick.
