Hi Guys,

I'm finally getting round to giving my room some treatment.

I intend to build my own traps using rockwool but due to the abnormal shape of my room I have no idea where is best to put them.

I've attached a PDF plan of my room. As its in a roof space I have sloping ceilings and the room is quite long - circa 28 ft (x14ft)

I'm not sure if I need to treat the back end of my room as its quite a distance. I was planning on just treating the front half only.

Any input received on this is very much appreciated.

Thanks

SM

Hi SM,

Unfortunately I have no answers for you, but we seem to be on a very similar quest. My attic is very similar in size to yours. Photo of attic. Obviously the first thing is to site the desk on the end wall, as in your diagram, but that's as far as I've got.

I'm currently trying to get a handle on how to test it all, before, during and after treatment. I don't see much point in building traps and panels until I first know exactly what I'm trying to cure, and then whether I've achieved it later. Otherwise there's a risk of just moving problems around.

Sadly, the people who seem to really understand all the audio implications speak a complex language that is completely foreign to me, so I'm currently trying to decode and interpret some of it. If I find anything out that seems relevant, and comprehensible, I'll post it. Good luck.

Cheers,

Chris

Chris,

Yes, your space is very very similar to mine, even down to your monitors !! lol.

I think I'm just gonna build 6-8 panels and try and get them in all the corners as best I can and put an extra few above and around my desk.

I read the acoustic thread yesterday afternoon over on Reaper forums in which "Yep" talks in detail about this stuff and he says any is better than nothing so I think I'm just gonna have a play around and see what sounds good.

I'll post back here with some photographs when I eventually get round to doing something.

Im in a similar situation as you guys. Even though my room is smaller and has no sloped ceilings (no snow here in mexico) im getting into home recording and I dont really know what a good room sounds like. As Hakea said, you can't really fight until you know what you're fighting against. I guess we should all know our rooms first and identify any critical spots. (Another problem here, whats a critical spot?)

I would really apreciate any help from more experienced members :D

Critical spots would typically include all 4 corners of the room, and first reflection points from monitors to listening position. Every corner could be treated, ie wall to ceiling, floor to wall, wall to wall, but usually the wall to wall ones are treated first due to ease of install as well as space concerns. Reflection points are just that, from your sitting position, hold a mirror up against the walls/ceiling, when you see the reflection of your monitors, place treatment there.

Thanks for the advice, the mirror tip makes perfect sense!
