rookie mixes

at least on the first couple songs. I would play more with the stereo image.

I would have to agree that there isn't much of a stereo picture. Also, the vocals are a bit loud (I just discovered the same about my damn songs too), and there seems to be some clipping in the lower mid ranges...

Nice 'rookie' efforts, though. Much better than I did my first couple songs.

Well, you got me running down stairs to grab my old Doors CD. Good cover of a great song. Besides the stereo issue you've got a good mix going on. Would like to hear some originals. For me, that's where it's at.... and the real measure of a band. Otherwise you'll get compared to the covered song.

Cheers,

Thanks, I'll work on the stereo'ing.

About the bass: I gave the mp3 to several ppl for review, and got a lot of 'no bass' comments, so I pushed up the bass fader more than I thought I should have. I only notice it in my car really, it's definately bassier than commercial music. Sounds ok on my monitors, not offensive at least...

Bass eq curves are shown below. The bass eq curves are very slight cuz it was recorded DI from a POD, which is supposed to be more/less ready to record. I thought bass would be the easiest thing to get set, it's ending up giving me the most trouble! I'm interested in seeing other ppl's eq curves for bass (and other various instruments), similar to the pic below, esp. if there's an mp3 of the final mix with that curve. Does such a thing exist? I think it could be real helpful

Cheers,

I agree, this cover band is just kind of a fun friend jam thing for me. I'd prefer to write and produce my own stuff too, but I don't know any musicians that can crank out the music I wanna make! And the 1-man-band thing is difficult for me cuz I can play guitar well, and everything else just kinda ok..

Since you asked, check out http://www.supr-star.com/recoil - That was my last band, all orig. material.. Radio rock.. Not recorded, mixed, or produced by me in any way, it was done in an actual studio. I'm curious what you guys think of the mix, we had strong conflicting opinions about it.

I can't post a pic of my settings right now because I don't have a picture editor on this laptop yet...

But I usually start with a highpass filter set at 100hz and work my way from there, depending on how well I tracked the bass...

Sounding pretty good for rookie mixes...I'd like to hear better quality than MySpace has though...that might help make the sound a bit fuller. That MySpace player bites.

From what I heard, I'd like to see you guys live...:D

Thanks! Actually I think the mix sounds a little sparse or something too, even on the wav mixdown file.. I assume there's some mastering techniques that'd make the songs sound fuller, and I just don't know what they are.. Or maybe it's a mixing thing, I don't really know what I'm doing, sooo.... I didn't do a single thing with the mixed wav.

I agree that the vocals are too up front, I would settle them into the mix a bit more. And it could use some more panning. Outside of that it's real good, the performances are good, i don't hear any frequency ranges muddying up.

For the bass issue, if you want more punch there have you tried compressing that track a bit instead of boosting the level?

All songs were recorded exactly the same way. Everything is DI except the vox, which is sung thru a shitty sm58 clone. The only thing that got re-tracked was the backup vox, otherwise everything else is live from rehearsal.

2 tracks v-drums stereo L/R
1 bass
1 vox
1 backup vox
1 guitar POD
1 line6 spyder head (line out)

Thx, im not ecstatic about the performances, but they'll do.. I did add a little compression to the bass, but not very much.. I've been experimenting with cubase's multiband compressor, the default 'electric bass' preset, tweaking it a little. Some of the tracks have that, some have just a standard compressor with 1.5-2.0 ratio and auto attack/release. Auto can prolly do better than me guessing at settings.. I messed around with it and didn't realy hear very dramatic differences, which I attributed to the low ratio. I'll try cranking it up a little,

check out this website, there are articles there all about compression and how to use it properly:
