Roland SR-JV80 Wave Expansions

Has anyone used (or heard) the SR-JV80-13 "Vocal Collection" sounds? I need some "Pop" oohs and aahs (vs. church choirs). Or can anyone recommend a sample CD - for "oohs and aahs"? - I need an Akai 1000 format.

Also, has anyone heard the SR-JV80-08 "Keyboards of the 60s & 70s" sounds? In particula, are the Hammond and clavinet sounds worth the price?

The oohs and aahs sound like crap. They're too perfect. You totally lose the human touch. But that may be something you're going for intentionally. It's hard to describe - they sound real because they're sampled recordings. But at the same time, they sound manufactured.

Can't tell you much about the keyboards.
 
Thanks for the reply! I would likely mix one or two live voices (possibly double) to add realism. My main concern is are there some oohs and aahs that sound like 3 background singers vs. the Vienna boys choir.
 
It's been a couple years since I heard it, so I can't tell you if there are any that sound like 3 backup singers, but I'd guess yes. There are many different patches, not many of them "choir boys". Sounds like a good idea mixing real with sequenced. Hope it works for ya.

Just had a thought. I'm sure you could order it from a store that allows returns, and give it a test drive. I'm in the Pacific NW, and I get all my stuff from a store called American Music in Seattle - if I remember correctly, they allow returns on anything except computer software up to 30 days after purchase. That's what I would do, cuz $300 would be a lot to spend on something you end up not using.
 
Expansion boards

Hey Mike, if your looking for sounds for your akai sampler, I would highly recommend "Symphony of Voices" for some fantastic voices and choir sounds (www.ilio.com). Nevermind the Roland "Vocal" collection. They used some of the samples off of the "Symphony of Voices" CDs, but they left out the best samples! "SOV" is a 5 CD set of voice samples ranging from solo sopranos (multisamples also! FANTASTIC!!) to gregorian choirs to boys choirs, etc. The vocal collection on the Roland expansion board is limited. On "SOV" you get the multisamples of each voice and not just phrase samples.
I also have the "Keyboards of the 60's and 70's" and use it when I play live along with my Roland XP-80. If you can't afford a real B3 or haul one along with you, I recommend it. It does have some really great Hammond sounds and the rhodes sounds are fantastic as well. The clavs are okay, not much different then the clavs that already come with the XP80 in my opinion, but it is a great expansion board to have. The mellotron strings and choir sounds are good to. The real creme of the crop on this board is the Hammond samples and the rhodes. It's not a real Hammond, but it's good enough to use for live gigs. I play a real Hammond B3 at "House of Blues" where I work in the US, so I must say, you will never be able to truly capture the real sound of the B3 mostly because of the great harmonics that the tubes produce. Still a VERY cool sounding expansion board!
 
Thank you both for the info on voice sounds. I doubt if I could return an expansion board - it's basically the same as software. I've seen the SOV advertised - I wasn't planning to spend that much, but I'd rather spend $500 for something that's gonna work than $300 for something that I'm not happy with. I'd like to stay within the XP-30 keyboard (I have lost my patience for loading samples) but I really need decent vocal sounds - so maybe that is the way to go. Also thanks for the info on the "Keyboards of the 60's & 70"s. I'm pretty sure I will add that to my keyboard.
