Rode NTK for Hip-Hop Vocal/ Which Pre?

I'm recording rap vocals. I just got a Rode NTK. I believe it doesn't need Phantom Power. In fact, I was told that phantom power on a mic that doesn't need it (such as the NTK) will ruin the mic. Is this true? Also, Could anyone recommend a good 2 channel mic pre for under $500?
 
Either this thread looks curiously familiar . . . or I'm experiencing deja vu.

No, though some would argue that, since it doesn't need it, you may as well turn it off when you're using a tube mic.
 
Phantom power won't hurt the NTK. I use it with my mackie sometimes with other mics that need phantom power. With the mackie it either all channels phantom or not. Never had a problem.

As for a pre, you might also want tot look at the DMP3.

with a ntk you don't need phantom power.. its a tube mic thats powered by its own unit you have it plugged into..
don't half ass on a pre... get something good..
look into something like the Focusrite isa220. its a great pre to use with the ntk, its not 500 though.. its 1400 :D
at your price, i'd look into Toft Audio.
 
The DMP3 is a great pre with the NTK. Not the best, but for most purposes it does its job well.
 
The DMP3 is a very nice two channel pre. Very clean and quiet. It probably isn't as good as the focusrite listed above, but it's less than $200 and you will always find a use for it, even when you can afford something better.

I am using the Edirol UA-5... its a USB Interface preamp but it works well for me. I too use it for Hip Hop Vocals...

i don't really label vocals.. like ra[p/hiphop vox, or rock vox.
i go for a clean vocal chain. i mainly produce r&b these days, but i have hiphop artist, crunk type artist, poets etc..

the dmp3 is a good pre for the money, thats no lie. i never got the sound i wanted using them though. when i stepped up to a aphex 201, 1100 i got a great vocal sound that i was actually impressed with... all ppl that here things that i do never think it was made in a basement studio. my next buy will be a neve pre.. something along the lines of a vintech or chandler. i see now pres make a huge difference, but it depends on the mics you have too.

anyone use the K2 yet, i'll be ordering one on friday

I bought a focusrite VMP. I'm learning how to use it now. i APPRECIATE U GUYS FOR ALL YOUR INPUT. I was impressed by the extensive controls you can have over your sound (optical expander, vintage harmonics, optical compressor, tube sound, voice optimised EQ, de-esser). I just like to process the hell out of my vocals to ensure a tailor-made sound while recording. Good choice?
