cool! it really sounds like the mic I'm looking for, since i want to use it to capture the (false) harmonics of some of my acoustic songs.

However, I don't know if I can get over the electrolet/degrading-mic concept

Get over it.:D It will take an EXTREMELY long time for an electret to lose its charge.

Dear Mr. Assink,

Thank you for contacting AKG.

Electret technology made strong progress during the last 20 years.

Depending upon the environment conditions, an electret mic will have a loss of 3dB in outputlevel during 30 to 40 years.

In practice, one would not hear or measure any difference during the first 20 years.

Please find more details about the C 451B at following link: http://www.akg.com/products/powerslave,mynodeid,15,id,223,pid,223,_language,EN.html

kind regards

Nowhere in that link, nor any of the AKG literature I've searched to date, has ANY mention of the mic being an electret.

They call this "lying by omission".

As for the 30 year thing, as of this writing, I have two mics that are 30 years old. I am using them today, and value the sound as much as I did 30 years.

I expect myself to be -3dB after 30 years, but I'll be damned if I'll tolerate that in my mics. Especially for the premium price paid for the C451B. If they want to sell them for $79.95, that is a different story.

Ditto for the SM81.

the old version 451 is and was a top notch mic. ..interchangeable heads, etc. .. with this feature making it MUCH better than the newer version. The new mic has a fixed head and imo, AKG is trying to cash in on their old "glory day" mic with this newer version.
Probably one of the best mics for OH, imo.

For home project studios, I doubt actually most people will put the subtle differences (of the old version mic) to use as compared to using the new version.

Tube... that IS a good price on your mic. Can't believe it isn't snapped up. Probably a case of people not knowing what it is....and this BS fear of the electret stuff.

Well, the answer from AKG appeased my mind, but I did not like the fact that they indeed 'lied by omission'.

I won't hear the difference and in 20 years, it might be obsolete, so it's just the psychology of paying that much for something that is degenerating from the moment of production. I know it is nothing but whining, so I'll get over it.
