Rode NT1A - Vs - SP C1 Which is the best bang for buck???

I have used neither, but both have the same amount of letters in the name, so it might be a tossup.

The tie breaker - add up the numeric value of each of the three letters and the one number. Highest total wins. Like in poker tie, kind of.

Well for what it's worth, I chose the TB1 because I tried both the NT1 and NT1A and really didn't like the sibilant factor. They are not bad mics, just not for my vocals. They seemed thin and even if detailed, they were lacking in something. It didn't sound like my voice to me or the other two people with me to help me compare.

I was going to get the C1 when I called up PMI and asked their opinion on B1 or C1. After discussing what I wanted, they felt the B1 would be better for my voice, but there was a TB1 B stock that would be somewhere in between the C1 and B1, at least that's how I understood it.

So, I bought the TB1 and love it. It is not over hyped, not honky, not boxy, but very clear and with my Joemeek threeQ I can use it with very little EQ. It sounds great for up close vocals and also works well at 12 to 24 inches.

The thing is, you must consider what you want the mic to do. For me it was MY vocal mic first and then to be used for micing elect guitar amps and acoustic. I've done all three and also several other voices and it worked great for all of them. Also, you must remember we all have different ears, hear different things and the human voice sounds very different to the singer compared to the listener. I would suggest you take someone who knows your voice and let them hear you sing in the mics and take their input. As we say in the opera world, you are not getting paid to hear your own voice!

Just my 2 cents! :)

S.P. C1 mic versus Rode NT1A

I own both a S.P. C1 and Rode NT1A condensers. I voice record for a living - commercials and stories both here in the U.K. and down the line to the States ...don't play or sing, and for what I need from a mic, the Rode wins hands down. Both are great mics, but the Rode is unbelievably quiet!! The BBC record their Audio Books down in Bath, Western England, and their three studio set-up use Rode NT1's. That's about the best endorsement you'll ever get. The BBC don't just "pop out to Radio Shack" and pick up any old mic, a lot of testing will have taken place before they make a decision. Apart from the lack of self noise, the sound is incredibly true. They say "The best EQ is No EQ" - and "Get it right at the mic." For me, the NT1A does exactly that. O.K. - Rode don't provide a little flight case as S.P. do, but then it does look a little like Barbie's lunch box, and I'd never use it. What Rode DO provide is a superb shock mount and integral pop shield as well as 20 feet of low noise XLR cable. Just love it! If I broke it, I'd buy another tomorrow without hesitation. At 130 quid on-line, the Rode is a steal.

I dont know if this helps since the OP is likely dead by now...but of the two Ive had the original C1 and the NT1 but I understand the design has changed just a bit...but the C1 was flattering on most vocals...and the NT1 wasnt really usable for that much.

After everything I have read I would like to see this exact poll but with a MXK V67G. I am trying to decide on a vocal mic and since I do not have any good preamps yet I think one of these 3 would be alright for my voice, I am leaning toward the MXL v67g.

The MXL v67 has a nice tone that allows for piling up tracks...its not as flattering as the C1 but you cant pile the C1 track like that.

The NT1 really sounded weak to me...I didnt keep it for long.

FLAT PICKER
I think you are exactly right. Its all in what is pleasing to the ear, and that means distortion/harmonics to me. I love the Neve story and I bet thats exactly what happened.
