to say that the Shure SM57 is not a good mic for someone just starting out is just NOT TRUE.
Are you confusing fact and opinion? I don't think the 57 is a good mic for someone to start out with. I think it's a good mic to get after you've already gotten a couple decent condensors, for the reasons I've stated above. However, I would never say that "to say that the Shure SM57 is a good mic for someone just starting out is just NOT TRUE." There is no "true" and "false" in evaluations like these, it's just my opinion versus yours, and hopefully people do a decent job of explaining their reasons for feeling that way.

cominginsecond, thank you for the debate..... I enjoyed it. :)

applesmasher, I hope are little debate will help you to see both sides of this coin and make up YOUR mind which mic you want to get..... and remember to re-read what everyone in this thread said before are debate too. Later. :)

Get BOTH the SM57 and B1!

You'll find vocal applications for each one since they have a
"different" (though good) sound for vocals.

Apple, if you can fit it in the budget, get a parametric EQ unit.
It'll help stretch the options for you, especially when you just
have one or two (or three!) vocal microphones.

Chris

this was very benefecial :)
punk rock/blues by the way.
We suck very bad:)
Ty.

Get a B1 and use it for vocals, drum overheads and anything else you might need.

At the same time get an SM57 and use that for Snare drum and guitar Cabs.

DI your bassist direct and you have 95% of what you need to do a basic punk rock recording.

It's great on amps, snare, and gritty vocals.

I think that's the kind of vocals he's planning to do, :D and I think that's also why people are recommending it in this instance.

The title of this thread pretty much says it all. Dude wants a rock mic.

Verdict: 57

another vote for a 57 or 58...excellent workhorse and a great first mic...you will always have a use for it no matter how big your collection gets...in fact most people own there first and 10th sm57 to this day!!!......cheap , reliable and a studio standard the 57 rocks it!For the kind of guitar sound I like a 4x12 close micd cab with the sm57 is awesome.....and I could see punk or rock vocals doing great with it...Rob Zombie uses a 58 in the studio ( not that that isn't heavily affected good singing or anything but hey) I read that Bono or Sting or someone liked that tracked with 58's...... Plus you can drive a car over one and it still works....:D

So what you're saying is that dude doesn't need overheads? Or a decent tamborine mic?

Chant with me now: B-1! B-1! B-1! B-1!

:D Yea, but if he wanted a tamborine or overhead mic, why didn't he name the thread: Rock/tambo/ovherhead mic ? ? ?

Look, man, the dude just wants to ROCK ! ! ! !

Are you going to deprive the poor guy of his right to party or what, man?

No, man, chant with me: ROCK ! ! ! ROCK ! ! ! ROCK ! ! !

Listen here: rock is 15 percent snarly vocal, 30 percent massive, boneheaded drums, 30 percent Marshall stack, 10 percent bass, 10 percent groupie sex and 5 percent tamborine for the lead singer to shake around during the gratuitously long guitar wankfest. The B-1 does an admirable job on all these sources (especially the sex) for the same price as the 57.

B-1! B-1! B-1! B-1! B-1!

This just in . . .

Cominginsecond does not want you to rock out and/or party.

On the all-important Rockometer, he fails to even jolt the meters out of their listless slumber. Cominginsecond, I worry for you and future of our children. In this day and age, you gotta' fight for your right to party.

Remind me never to buy any used mics (esp B1s) from you

all i know about tambourine is that every time i try to mic one with a condenser i cant use what i get.

it sounds like a tambourine, then i remember how annoying they are.

now a 57 on tambourine... that is another thing.

I have fought hard for the right to party. Chessrock is on a smear campaign designed to impugn my allegiance to the rock (AKA the rawk). The B1 is simply my method of acheiving rock. The B-1 is the new SM57. It's you rock dinosaurs that are impeding the way of progress and unity as we embark on a new day, where B1s are plentiful and SM57s are kept in their place as specialty mics, designed mainly for snare and amp.

For a better tomorrow, please remember one thing: B-1! B-1! B-1! B-1! B-1! B-1! B-1! B-1! B-1! B-1! B-1! B-1! B-1! B-1! B-1! B-1! B-1! B-1!

Hey cominginsecond, do you own any other LDC mic's besides the B1?

I don't even own a B1; I have a B3, which is basically a multipattern B1. I think it sounds good on everything I've thrown at it. I also have a Rode NTK. Those are the extent of my LDCs. I also have a pair of Oktava MC012s, a 57, a AT Pro 25, a pair of ECM 8000s, the Radio Shack tom mic, and a Peavey PV dynamic.

now dont make me get out the tear gas lets try to keep this civil here guys. :p

Just a RAWK MIC! ROCK! ROCK! RCOK! ROCKO! And I will settle for 10% drunk party girl sex!

Now, this is funny............ lol. :D
A B3 is a B1 with extra patterns. Why can't I suggest a B1 for a budget conscious home recordist without it being funny?
