Is the Really Nice Pre as good a bang for the buck piece of gear as the Really Nice Compressor?

Just wonnerin'

Thanks!

MK

:)

Sure, I don't wanna work, I just wanna bang on my buck all day!

Well, its more expensive so a little harder to buy- but hell yeah its every bit as good a deal. To be honest, I don't have much experience with other preamps in its price range, but it OBVIOUSLY blows away everything else I have in most cases. May be more a statement of what I have than anything, but...

Here's what I have to compare it to:
- Pres on a Soundtracs SOLO Midi
- Pres on an Alesis Studio 24
- Mackie VLZ pres
- Joemeek 3Q (burr-brown pre, I think)
- Are Dual MP (unmodified)

The SOLO pres are *really* nice and quite a bit better than anything else I have listed. The RNP, though, sounds cleaner and sweeter- a bit larger than life. Its my go-to lead vocal preamp and saavy singers notice it right away, too.

Anyway, I'm really pleased with it.

Take care,
Chris

Thanks, Chris!

I am currently using a Mackie 1202 VLZ. How would you compare it to that, and how do you think it would sound on a Taylor acoustic (fairly bright)?

i had a mackie 1604vlz pro. when i bought the RNP i figured i'd use it for lead mic stuff and keep using the 1604 for sound canvas and drum machine DI, but i ended up using the RNP for both mic stuff and DI stuff because it is so clean and the top end is so much clearer than my mackie was.

I now have the tascam fw-1884 and the RNP kicks the 1884's butt too.

I've got an RNP as well as a Pendulum MDP-1, a Peavey VMP-2, a couple Millennia TD-1s, API 512cs and some GT MP-1s. The RNP keeps up in that company. It doesn't have the tube "warmth" that the tube pres have, but it does have it's own sound and plays really very well with a number of mics. I particularly like it with my SM7 and SM57s. Works fine with my ribbons too. I like it for electric guitar and as a DI. The other nice feature is that it balances my RNCs since you can use the insert jacks for them. The new ones have nicer knobs though. I need a knob upgrade! :D

Mannn MK, you know better than that asking a question like this sounding like some kinda' newbie :D !! You been around here too d@mnnn long and most likely have seen every cotton-pickin' "PRE" thread posted on this BBS!!!! :p

You should also know that HR member Fletcher of Mercenary has posted numerous clips, comparisons, specs and factoids on RNC'S, P'S & T'S!!! ;)

Now stop acting like you've only been here 3 weeks and use the "search function" fool!!! :p :D

I did, Q, and didn't find anything that answered my particular question.

Besides, you've been here long enough to know that I only hang out in the Cave!

;)

Thanks all, for your answers, even Q, who I now see how he has 5000+ posts!

:D

Thing is, everyone, well, practically everyone, raves about the RNC. I see a lot less raving about the RNP. I suppose they might, if it were less than $200.00 like the RNC, but, here, it is close to 500 Euros.

Cheers,

MK

I think the RNP is great, but it's not quite the value that the RNC is. The RNP is as good as other things in its price range: GT Brick, Grace 101, Safe Sound P1, etc. The RNC blows away absolutely everything else in its price range by a mile, IMO.

Well, the RNP is a 2 channel pre -- @$240 a channel new. The others are all single channel pres (albeit with compression I think in the case of the Safesound) - so they cost significantly more per channel (more than twice as much in some cases) as the RNP.

Well,

It is on my list for Santa. I've got a few quite decent mics (AKG 414 B-ULS, Rode NTK, and AKG 451B). I find that the sound I am getting through the Mackie is a bit thin.

Thanks for your input guys!

The RNP kicks the stuffins' out of the Mackie VLZ's.... without even breaking a sweat. It'll do the Taylor *very* well with a couple nice SD condensor or whatever you have. That's the treatment my 110 usually gets these days when I'm being serious: A coupla 603's x/y into the RNP. Done.

Comin' this week, probably tomorrow or Tuesday. I really hope it is significantly better than the VLZs, because I really am not thrilled with the results I was getting from them, as I said, with a few quite decent mics.

I'll let ya'll know what I think, and, again, thanks for the input!

My only two outboard pres are the RNP and the Joemeek TwinQ. The RNP is my go to pre for vocals, and since I layer a lot of vocs I get a pretty good midrange buildup. If you follow my sig you'll find two songs - The Time I Took is a good example of the RNP with eight or more vocal tracks.

It sounds a little retro to my ears. I like it.
