RNC vs Ultradyne Pro

I know Im going to get flamed for this but Its gotten to the point where I now can purchase the Ultradyne pro for just about the same amount as I can the RNC.

Right now I am using a dBx compressor that was on many of the 70's records I like and Ive also got a line on a classic Orban.

So you see I have choice of compressors in the 175.00 range. I was going to get the RNC if I feel a new one is in order.

But now Im in A quandry. Even though the RNC is getting good reviews here, the Ultradyne pro has got great reviews from Recording mag.

And heaven Knows the orban is a facinating prospect. and the theres the bird in the hand dBx that has found Itself on a few great sounding alblems. should I buy any of these comps or just go with the dBx 161?
 
Is the DBX serving it's purpose? Does it sound like you want it to? Do you suspect you'll need something different in the future that the DBX can't do?

I guess that's what I'd ask myself...Of course I ignore my answers and buy new stuff anyway, but hey...thought I play the role of your conscience for a bit. ;)
 
I would be cautious when it comes to magazine reviews esp Recording magazine.They can be handy for hard info about products but every product review that I've read in that magazine has been glowing.Before I had internet access Recording was about my only source of information and I spent quite a bit on gear that didn't measure up to their reviews.I would value more the opinions of people who actually use the products and who are not trying to sell advertising space.

As far as the RNC it is about the only piece of gear that seems to be praised by everyone that uses it.I don't have one but if I ever need an outboard compressor the RNC at $175 would be my choice without a doubt.
 
I've got the RNC and I love it, but I don't have the Ultradyne, so I can't compare. However, based on reviews, supposedly the RNC is (was) the best compressor for under $1k. Based on this information alone, you could argue that unless the Ultradyne is a >$1k compressor, it is not as good as the RNC. Take that for what it's worth.


Btw, both Looney and Randy gave some good tips.
 
Recording mag gives great reviews on everything.... that's no help!
 
Just a word to the wise about magazine reviews. If a manufacturer advertises in a magazine, then guess what? They are likely to get a good review. I have been in the technology biz for a lot of years and marketing people use ad dollars to buy good reviews.

About the only time you can trust a review is if it is a shoot out of several products. And many times these are manipulated.

Hate to sound jaded but this is what I have seen and experienced. That's why I come here to get advice from real people using products and relaying their experience.
 
Has Anyone used the Orban, I can get that one for 160.00.

When All is said and done Ill probubly just stick with the dbx.

By the way I just got my email and I won my Auction on my dbx deesser for $30. I hope that doesnt sound like too much but Ive been having a problem with this one chick and syblence, and that sounded like a decent price for a quick fix.

I use the Behringer Ultradyne for multiband compression/limiting/enhancement.
It is basically a mastering tool that you may compare with the TC Electronic Finalizer ! The main difference is the prize : under 200$ for the Behringer while the TC Finalizer is still beyond 2000$ !!!
I am afraid the Ultradyne will be a little bit complicated for single source compression but it should work if you have enough time to run through numerous parameters (6 freq. bands !).
Definitely a good choice for mastering.

Just want to add ...

... that the current price of the Ultradyne is a real trade off !
This gear is coming from over 500$, but I suspect that all development costs have been refunded by large sales. Therefore, Behringer may offer you a real bargain on this gear today. I also suspect it will not last for long ...

For what it's worth, I picked up a Finalizer Plus (not 96kHz) on eBay last year for $850. It was a lucky grab, but you still can get them used for under $1k. Supposdly the A/D converters alone are worth the price.
