Need some opinions. I'm not very good at this thing yet.

Rhinoplast is a 5 piece punk-ska band. My voice isn't very great, but the rest of things are pretty decent.

Give me a thumbs up or down and some level adjustments and I'll love you forever. Really.

Thanks guys. Mad respects.

listening on headphones sorry.....

i like the style.....

vocal level may need to come up....or may be the guitar masking it a bit....hard to tell......

very interested arrangement....i see a rollercoaster in the video.....

very good!

Could bring the snare up a bit though
And not with the same snare sound that the song starts with. No didn't like the snare sound at all. Make it sound better and turn it up. The rest is groovy......

I can't get the damn snare to sound better. I've tried. He doesn't have a great kit sound so it was hard to get it working.

I agree that we need more of it. I'll look into it. Thanks for checkin it out guys.
If anyone else is interested, drop over there and let me know!

Thanks!!!!!!

PS:

We're doing a full-length CD so I've got lots of mixing practice ahead of me. This is just the first one that's ready, I'll post a couple more as we go along.

Brought the snare up a bit. Couldn't do a ton about his tone, but it's a little punchier now.

I rewrote the file on the webpage so if you download it it's the next version.

Well to me...the snare is fairly unique (sort of). Could be a plus for you guys. You know kind of like 311 has a charateristic snare sound. If you still want it to sound better you might try an O-ring. Or just cut an old drum head up and put it on there. I have even used just a folded paper towel and the taped it on the top or just lay it on top. And some people swear by using a maxi pad too. Any case a little muffling might help. You might want to make sure the bottom head is in tune also. Thats where a lot of the ring can come from. Otherwise check the pawn shops. You might be able to find a decent snare some ex-band student pawned to buy crack. Maybe a little more EQ on the bass drum too. Cut the mids. Turn up the bass a bit and highs too if you want a clicky bass sound.

Great sound though. I liked all of it. Good mix too.
And if you have time listen to this -

Not bad but the kick, snare and bass need to be more prominent. You might want to add in a sampled snare and kick if you cant get decent sound with what you have.

The bass player is good but he gets kinda lost in the mix.

Yeah the bass and snare still need to come up. More bass will help tie in the horn breaks, which sound good, but rather disjointed when the guitar drops out.

Also I don't like those 3 sliding guitar cords that start at about 2:31. They remind me of a part in an old Rush song Cynus-X1 and stylistically, to me, sound totally out of context - and not in a good way. They should be more staccato and jangley or something.

Fun tune!

Lessee, where to start.

Beezo--Cut the mids on the bass drum.. boost the lows and highs.. can do and will give it a try in the morning.

TexRoadkill--Sampled snare? Would do it but we're a live act and we're really looking to use "real" instruments on the recording. I don't know how the drummer would take to me replacing his kit with samples. ;) Hehehe.. He might be a little annoyed with me.

Barefoot-- 2:31 -- Actually there is a vocal part that is missing from all of the choruses that goes there, a group vocal. You'll notice it when I finally post a final mixwhen it's done. More bass? I thought he was coming through well. Maybe he's getting buried under the distortion--I'll bring him up a touch. Tryin' not to drown out the lead vocals. Not hard to do with my lame voice.

I'll play with things in the morning when my ears are fresh again. Just got off a loud motown-type job and my ears are ringing.

Hehe.

Thanks,
-Rick

Dropped some mids from the kick.

Snare still sucks but that's the way it was recorded. He's getting a pic' snare soon so I'm not too worried.

Brought out the bass and kick and snare a touch.

Let me know what you think. Minus the chorus vocal, it's almost ready I think.

i've listened to both versions. And i lose the lead vocal in the second mix you posted sometimes. besides that, its pretty rocking, besides the ending of the second mix... it just trails off, i don't think it did tha first time around, it sounds abrupt. And almost as if that wasn't how you played it.

Rick,

I dont think the vocals sound all that bad, rather it fits the style of the music. Yours is close to that of Five Iron Frenzy. Ever hear of them?

Snare up. and other than that sounds good to me. Where in Detroit do you play. Im from the Port Huron area. Let me know what you think of my local music. www.mp3.com/sondriven

Good job for recording real instruments!

Hey I checked out your webpage...I like it. It is bright and fits well with your music. I still think you could do a little better on the bass drum. I think now it just needs a little more highs. If you listen cafefully to the bands today you'll notice that a lot of bass drums have a click to them. You'll get that by raising the highs starting from 4khz to 11khz. I used a 20 band EQ and just did a nice slope up from 4khz and back down on the EQ to make an upward curve. I don't know what you are using for EQ but that might help. If you are just using a board with a 3 band EQ you may not be able to achieve this. My only problem is that when the rest of your group comes in you kind of lose the bass drum a bit. If you want to look for a sound to emulate in a bass drum, I would suggest Incubus, A Perfict Circle, Bush, and certainly Metallica. Maybe not quite as much click as Mettalica though. Other than that, great mix. Oh and I was wondering....what are you mixing on?? Studio monitors, headphones, or what?

Wow, more replies. This is fun!

kristian-- Thanks for the advice. I also feel the vocals getting buried a little. I'll drag 'em up a touch. Yeah, I havent cleaned up the ending yet for the latest mix. Gotta set the locaters and do a nice fade-out.

sondriven-- Actually we just got things rocking. 3 of our members used to play with a band called Ich Bin Ein Berliner and we played a lot around Michigan the past 3 years. Band split up, long story short, three of us started a new band. Yeah, we almost did a couple of shows with 5 iron. Hehehe.. I'll check your stuff out when I get in tonite.

Beezoboy-- Thanks for the in-depth view. I'm recording everything into Cubase with an Aardvark Q10. I'm mixing down on a pair of Yamaha MSP3's.
Unfortunately I've only got a 4 band EQ. Is there a plugin I can for Cubase that will give me a 20 band? That sounds just awesome.

Thanks guys. I'll have a new song to post eventually. Smile. ;)
