Rewire is giving me severe problems

I am rewiring Reason(slave) into Cubase(master)...I have around 6-8 tracks on cubase and around 15 devices altogether in Reason. Whenever i'm trying to playback, there is extreme lag in the audio. i wouldn't say audio dropout because it's constant. also, cpu usage is 100%. i'm using a P4 2.8 CPU with 1 GB RAM and there's also plenty of hardrive space. what could be the problem here? oh yeah by the way, i'm using a MOTU 828mkII. i tried playing windows audio and it works fine there; but in rewire, the whole audio gets screwed over. anyone?

When you say severe lag, do you mean the two (cubase and reason) are not syncing correctly? Or is it just that when you push play it takes a while for the audio to playback?

They are synced up perfectly...it's like pops/crackles/dropouts altogether. pretty hard to explain it. it sounds like when the buffer size is awfully low in Reason for example, and audio is contanstly stopping and playing.

BTW, buffer size and sample rates are fine since audio runs smoothly when Cubase or Reason is used individually.

Hmm..I am not understanding fully what is happening then. I had a problem that I posted about one time with Reason(slave) and Pro Tools(master) causing static and clicking on playback. I found that disabling the Airport Card in my G5 removed this issue. I am not familiar with Windows OS as much, but perhaps there is some kind of conflict while using the Rewire feature?

When you have only one track of audio in Cubase and one device in Reason, does it do the same thing? Or only when you get to multiple tracks/devices?

All the time...it looks like Reason and Cubase are enemies. they just won't play along with each other in a nice way.

Could it be my hard drive(s)? my SATA HDD gives minor problems once in a while such as Disk I/O errors.

That might cause the problem, although I am weary of that conclusion on because you say that alone this problem doesn't occur.

Has it always happened? Or only recently? Have you installed, upgraded, or modified anything on the machine??

Recently...just like 2 days ago. 3 days ago, i had a recording session with a vocalist, and they ran like butter! I recorded the vocal tracks; next day, i tried rewiring them and everything went haywire.

Which drivers are you using for your Motu? WDM or ASIO? If you are using WDM, try switching over to the ASIO drivers. If you didn't install the ASIO drivers when you installed your Motu, you may need to reinstall the drivers for it. Also, if you haven't updated your drivers recently from the Motu site, you might want to do so. I was having very similar problems with Reason, Sonar 5 and my 828mkII and they were solved by going to the ASIO drivers.

This always a good idea to start troubleshooting by updating your drivers.

Since it was recent, I would try the update first. But also, think about anything you changed between the two sessions. Any software you installed, uninstalled. Anything. It may be something small that changed on your system that causes a glitch like this to occur.

Cool, ok. I'll rollback the drivers now. Thanks a lot, jimmy and sile! Appreciate it!

No problem, man! Let us know how it turns out so we know for future reference!
