I'm replacing the heads on my toms. Top and bottom.
I have a new set of Aquarian Studio X for the top.
The old heads are Studio X.
On the bottom I have the stock single ply remos. (about 2 1/5 years old)

I was thinking of using the used Studio X heads on the bottom. (heads are in good shape, Only replacing because I'm starting a new project)

My question is should I just stick to single ply heads on the bottom or use the used heads from the top?

It's my understanding that the bottom head has a lot to do with the resonance of the drum sound. A 2-ply head will not resonate much and, I would expect having them on both the top and bottom would yield a dead/cardboard box kind of sound. I'd stick to the single ply and, given that they're 2 1/2 years old, it's probably time to replace them with some new ones.

I do have a new set of single ply heads also.
I dont like dead cardboard sounding toms. I like some ring.
I think I stick to single ply on the bottom.

Yeah TimboZ - I'd avoid putting used heads on the reso side. New, single-ply uncoated would be the way to go. Especially since you are using Studio X on the batter side.

Cheers, Rez

Yeah...used reso heads can go on the batter side with good results, assuming they're not too thin, but used batter heads on the bottom...nasty...particularly since the one's you're considering are pre-muffled.

I think you should at least try the old heads on the bottom to let me know how it sounds, so I don't have to try it. :p

I think in order for this to work, the reso heads really need to be even across the surface and be free of dents, divets, etc. You'll have to re-seat the head on a new bearing edge... it's time consuming and a bit of a pain and you'll most likely be unsatisfied with the end result.

Makes sense.

single ply is common for bottom heads.
