Hello everyone!

Just thought I would finally post some images... basically these are somewhat before images (even though I've already started the project -- mostly superficial stuff like painting )

Anyway, what I'm planning is this:

1. upgrade console (ordered mackie 32x8)
2. Custom built rack cabinet (like Argosy's spire 1402 unit)
3. Acoustic treatments (to help cut out the horrible reflections I get, improve accuracy and eliminate the massive bass traps in this space)

I'm planning some other things... but I can't remember what they are right now

Anyway... here are some images... as each phase is done... i'll probably post more pictures

Lots of very nice gear there

I would build a nice desk to put your new mixer in and have the racks mounted inside/under it.

I've seen a few designed where they have 3 or 4 rack spaces on top of the mixer where you find the meter bridge on some consoles. I think this would work good for alot of your effects, preamps and your patch bay.

Big stuff like your harddisk recorder? would have to go under the desk because it would be too deep and maybe too heavy to put up there.

On top of that would be a shelf for your montiors. I seen a thread a while back where this guy had build him self a really nice desk for his console like this.

I would get a few rackmounted power conditioners with the pull out lights and put them in the top spaces in the racks above the mixer. They would be really cool looking plus they would light up your board and rack gear, and they would keep all your power cables in the racks insted of on the floor.

I would put the full thing on castors too, so you can pull it out from the wall with ease to repatch anything that isn't running through the patch bay.

I can't wait to have the gear so I have to build my own desk

You got it Garak Hey I love Ausrocks desk - that's what you need. Most of that rack gear can fit over the console, even if it's a Mackie 32/8 WITH meter bridge. The only hassle with the mackies is that you have to be able to get to the back unless you want to build a huge patch bay. But I suppose the soundcraft is no different is it ausrock?? How did you get around that factor??

Hey Minusone - that looks like really nice shiney new gear in a nice room so you wouldn't want to put up crappy room treatment. Check these out and build (or get someone to) these wall treatments and with ausrocks console you'll have a great setup.

I feel kind of embarassed at your compliments, but thank you very much.
On the RH side of the console is the patchbay section. I took the idea of a hinged unit from one of the studios on your site ( I think it was Track Rats), so I can access the back of the P/bays without climbing underneath. The Soundcraft doesn't have a meterbridge option but all XLR and jack sockets are on the top surface, which meant that top rack unit still sit about 100 - 110mm above the desk.
The only two disadvantages I can see with this design are;
1;Monitors, or more specifically their tweeters are well above my ears ( I have plans to rectify this, and I don't mean raising my ears .)
2;If, when I build my control room, I have a window in front of the seating position, then the unit is almost too high to look over comfortably.
But I have recently built two rack cabinets that sit under the front of the unit which gives me the option, if necessary, replace the top rack unit with a shelf, thereby solving both disadvantages.

Garak: Hey thanks for kind words I do agree with you on the desk... but alas... I lost that battle. I was showing my girlfriend (with whom I share this house) and there is no way in hell she would allow that... she says... and I quote "they all look like bumper pool tables from the 70's"

I have showed her the argosy 70 series and 90 series... and she was like "no way." I tried explaining that that "look" they have is actually quite beautiful in a studio context... she wasn't buying it. So... we agreed that I would get the mackie 32x8 stand and we would build something like... really like what Velvet Elvis has in his studio (that shelf-like unit over the mackie) -- she really liked that look (I do too by the way).

As for the rack unit... it will be adjacent to the board... kinda like the same layout right now... but in fact I may be tweaking that layout in order to change around the reflections (like move the console so that it "spans" the corner... so it creates a more like triangular shape).

John Sayers: Hey thanks I'll check that out. I haven't made any decisions regarding acoustic treatment... except that yes, I don't just want the usual blah tiles and foam... something that's a bit more "designer friendly"

As for the room treatments... i like the idea of the wall treatments (baffles and traps)... i just need to figure out how best to implement something like that as, the control room space isn't a room in of itself... its more like an annex (so it has 3 sides, and the fourth opening up into the rest of the room - which is like 20' x 14')

I am going to post a wireframe 2d floor plan... and see if I can get some feedback as to the best treatment of the space would be

heh... i'm putting together a bit of an ebay sale... i'm selling the mixer, an older fostex 8-track (hd) recorder and some other goodies.
