reformatted, now thousands of .wav/.veg files corrupt?!?!

So I reformatted and reinstalled everything with XP Pro onto my computer.

All files and everythere were backed up in 2 spots - cd or dvd, and an extra hard drive.

Now, with the fresh computer, the .VEG files will not open. HELP!!!!!!!!

I have NO IDEA what the problem could be.

The error(s), for any given .veg:
"Warning: An error occurred while opening one or more files.
The file is an unsupported format.
Details: File C:\Audio\SEAN ROARK\0Eyes for the Blind.veg could not be opened."

Some of them also say, instead of being "unsupported format," that "The reason for the error could not be determined."

I have two full audio albums (about 10+ tracks each, plus some extras) that had yet to be mixed, but all parts had been recorded....Now I can't open anything.

PLEASE tell me this is fixable. I'd be VERY happy to send a file or ALL the files to somebody to take a look at them, PLEASE let me know if there is anything that can be done. Thanks so much.



and, now I'm thinking that even the .wav files are corrupt..sicne vegas will not open them either (or any other program, for that matter). CAN this be fixed? ...defrag?!?!
 
What file system were you using?
FAT or NTFS?
What file system is the new install using?
 
both were NTFS.
went from XP home to XP Pro (part of the reason for the fresh install).

I'm gonna cry if I can't fix this. i'm defragging at this moment.

oh yeah, andddddd:
everything else that I transfered over from this HD to the other seemed to work out fine. Just all the files in this one folder (the most important) didnt seem to make it after the MOVE command...AH!
can I try a "chkdsk"? what is that full command, again?
 
The extra drive that you have the folder backed up to, is it installed/connected to the system?
Can you access those files directly from that drive?
How about opening those files from the DVD's/CD's?
You can try running chkdisk .... Right click on the drive > select properties > click tools .... Then Check now. The check will run on the next boot up.
 
I hate to ask the obvious question but did you remember to re-install Vegas?
 
veags opens and runs fine..just wont open those certain files. i'm gonna try a data recovery program, as well as chk disk. its not looking good tohugh.......

Another obvious question: are all the pieces that the veg files reference in the same place relative to where the veg files are that they were before? You do realize that the veg files contain pointers to the audio data files. If those files do not have the same relative path, then the pointers are broken.

For example, if before the veg files were in, say

C:\My Documents\Vegas projects

and the audio data was in D:\Audio

the veg files contain poiners to the audio data that say the files are in D:\Audio.

If now you reformat and the veg files were copied to C:\My Documents\Vegas projects but the audio files were copied somewhere else, or if you are opening the vegs off the CD you backed them up on, then the pointers are erroneous.

somebody over at the vegas forums had a great idea - which i never even knew was possible.

those data recovery programs REALLY do work..haha!

My BACKUP drive is something like 150gig, and it's not even half full. So, when I MOVED those files from the backup, to the C drive (and in the proccess everything got corrupt)...the files aren't really DETELED from the drive (backup drive). They are just shown to me as deleted, and are on the physical drive until I put something else on top of that same sector on the hard drive.

anywho, A freeware data recovery program brought ALL of the files back, flawless, and they work perfect. Thank you so much. haha. YES!!!!!!!!

I'm keeping that program in my arsenal for now. haha.

shack. i'm happy you got back your files ok.
if you have large amounts of critical files there are vault services around
that will store back ups for you in a secure location.
just an idea. peace.
