Howdy,

Dumped the sax......( somebody dope-slap me ) & replaced it w/ my favorite jazz organ.:D (I'll call on Lt. Bob for sure next time )

Lowered the tamborine & brought up the guitar part.

Brightened the Rhodes, fattened the synth pad, rounded the bass & tightened the verb.

Thanks for any comments,
Ralph

Red, White & B3 (formerly sax AMERICAN style)

Ralph,
You just keep crankin em out don't ya! All I can say is.....Flawless. Every time I listen to one of your tunes, I find myself saying.....DAMN! Where the did that come from?....this time I think it was about 5:15 - 5:20, man you really are a great musician. I really like your stuff!

bd

BTW, posted the collab on fostex forum if yer interested.

Much better...you're a damn fine player Ralph! :D

good stuff!!

not sure if I like it better, but that's just me.. The main sound is good, but I found myself wishing it was a guitar.. Seems like there is a bit too much reverb on the whole mix for me.. Maybe it's just the drums or the cymbals.. not sure.. the highat distracts me for some reason.. It really is being very nit picky though because it sounds good for the most part, and of course the playing is great! :)

Very nice playing and fine execution of the tune. I didn't get a chance to hear the version with the sax, but I do like the B3 on there. I really love the melody...It grows infectious and by the end I was totally humming along...

Very nice! :)

I just found the other version and this is definitely better! Please ignore most of my previous post.. It was before I got some caffeine in the system..

Ralph,
A fine job!

I really like the blend of the mix and the balance achieved throughout. It's tasteful, and fits this tune nicely.

An enjoyable listen!

listened to Bedlam first.. nice jammin organ tune. I like the music very much. Interesting that the drums seem to be right side oriented and the reverb is panned off to the left. Intentional? The drums are nicely sequenced, maybe panned a little unatural (toms kinda coming in from extreme pans, unlike the rest of the kit), but the organ licks take the cake. The bass is little undefined but holds the bottom end ok, however.

red/white/b3...
this one I didn't care for as much, musically, and mixwise seems in the same camp as the other tune. Seems you've got some nice keyboard chops. You need to hook up with some other solo players. I liked the rhodes sound much better for this tune, over the organ. Seemed to fit better for the style. Starts to verge a little bit on the "loungy" side of things...but that's ok..eh?;)

I can appreciate the playing and the music, but I almost put this in the camp of "background" music rather than instrumental...if you know what I mean. One lick that seems to be your fav is the triplet, decending triad thing you like to throw in fairly often. Kinda like the intro to "in-a-gadda-da-vida"...except in reverse!!

nice to hear some technique around here rather than sonics and mixing ditties, to keep the song "alive".

flat9...hhhmmm... didn't hear any tritones though!!:p

Expect partly to mostly sunny skies today. Highs near 55. On Monday mostly cloudy skies with showers moving in late in the day.

I'll bet Jeff Marcomb would love to put some guitar over this. He loves the Weather Channel! :)

All kidding aside, this does capture that smooth jazzy feel very well. I like the chord changes a lot, and you're a helluva organ player. It will probably be quite a while before my fingers can move across a keyboard that fast and confidently!

Nice job...mix levels sounds good too.

On a side note, our local weather guy said we might get some 70's here in New England next week for you and me. Winter might almost be over...

:D

:D hehe!!

yep, real nice. Could take either of the takes as well. I liked the sax patch one too. This one could make me all sexy feeling if in the 3rd round it had nylon strings on a big fat acoustic playing the melody then come back for resolve with the awegun.

Bet your ass I'm interested!.... I'm goin there right now before I respond to any of these posts! Why???? . Simply because I would do anything for you! Why???? Simply because you were the very first person to welcome me here and tell me that I should post in the clinic!

I've also have read a bunch of your posts and think you are a fine man & motivating individual.........consistently up beat , always there to help people , and if you have any criticisim, it is always constructive and never negative or condescending......consistently cool in the Fostex forum and in the cave..............Many folks on this board can learn from this, and that by the way, is why this one of the reasons why this is not a PM................oh , I forgot to mention the passion in your first musical post....( April's in your blood man!)

peace,
Ralph

ps..I'm not shittin' ya about doin' anything for for you bd....Send me one of your songs ...I'll gratefully smoke it for you! PM me and I'll do it in July.

Ralph,
Man you knock me out! I came here before replying in the Fostex forum, now I'm back because I want to make sure you see this post. I would be honored to have your keys on any one of my tunes! I'll have to work extra hard on my end just to get it to where you won't be embarrased to be there. Count on me PM'ing you before July! Thanks again, I appreciate the kind words.

Nice Man!!
Sweet organ playing on this. Very nice.... The laid back feel is a great place for the wailing b3 playing...... smooooove. Real nice hook melody too. .....When are you gonna put down the vocs?
......nice work man!

Nice groovy tune. Nice playing. Can't think of anything more to add beyond what's been said.

Response to my buds at this forum

Thanks again my friend. We'll be in touch!

Pedullist
Thanks for the second listen. You may not want me to tell everyone this but I was totally blown away by your PM, so suck it up, I gonna tell 'em anyways!
Trojka sent me a PM stating a desire to work on some of his jazz skills.........so.......he went ahead and transcribed the entire friggin tune, bassline, chords and melody! THEN, sent me an MP3 of him playing all the parts! It was the ultimate compliment and
very very impressive!
(only one wrong chord dude, am7 in the bridge as opposed to Cmaj7, unless of course you were playing the 3rd of the am7 instead of the root, in which case it was merely ONE incorrect bass note!!!!!) Great Musicianship Ped!

B.SABBATH
Yeah, I tend to be a little verb heavy. Also, thanks for taking the time comparing it with the origonal. I respect your ears & musicianship immensely!

boydrj
Thanks for the kind words esp about the "infectious" & hummable melody.

jcmm
Thanks for the listen & compliment.......means alot coming from you!

Nilbog
Nice words. Thanks for checkin' me out!

mixmkr
Have to say man, when I read the email notice that you responded to this thread, I went and got another cup of coffee and a marlboro before reading it as I've read a ton of your posts & value your thorough and candid critiques.

Bedlam: Unintentional panning and verb placement. That's usually the last thing I do to all my tunes after the final takes and I tend to be a little sloppy in this department.
Organ chops comp well rec'd...thanx!
Bass is too round, I tweaked the hell out of it in C.E.P. ( still needs a bit more punch!)

Red White & B3: I almost fell off my chair when I read your words as my wife ( who's got monster ears ) said the same thing almost verbatum! "Keep the rhodes but nix the lounge lizard B3 on this one dear." She actually prefered the sax on the first version, Sax American Style, somewhere later in these threads which I will do if I end up marketing it as a music bed. I've sold six of this type of 'cool jazz tunes' as backgrounds for 'industrial infomercials' so your comment on this aspect was dead on.
(I might get selfish with this one though as I have lyrics buzzin around in my head on it.)

Ya, I love that descending lick, definately one of my " must do in all 12 keys" favorites!

mixmkr quote " flat9...hhhmmm... didn't hear any tritones though!!" You gotta be shittin' me! There were 17 tritones in the chord structure, 1 in the melody and 29 in the intervallic spatial relationship contained w/in the melodic lines of the solo.

( just messin w/ya :D ) Thanks for your time and critique!

jake-owa
Thanks for the chops comment!

SLuiCe
LMAO! Ya, dude you & I had a bitch of a winter eh? Boston hit some nice highs today & yesterday though! Finally!!!
Thanks for the comps!
Once again, kudos on your rescent solo on "Under Dirty sheets" .

Toki
Thanks again for the second listen & the detailed imagery on my 1st post of this tune previously, comparison & suggestion.
hmmmmmm........a big fat acoustic .....nylon......hmmmm!

Guernica
Yo! I'm still reelin' from 'Under Dirty Sheets'!
Thanks for listening and the comps.
Lyrics lend themselves well to
this melody & I may add them down the road if I feel they are solid enough.

TripleM
Thanks for tuning in and the nice words!

Damn, I gotta learn how to type faster! This two finger stuff is killing me! ( anybody know of a good "type like lightning program??" Hey! Maybe I could sync it to a B3!! Naaaaah!:D

Thanks again people!
Ralph
