I'd like to add that for many artists - photographers and writers come to mind - much of the artistic endeavor never sees the light of day. For photographers, only a small percentage of photos taken will ever be printed as anything other than negatives or thumbnails. For writers - think in the typewriter paradigm here, please - most of the paper ends up wadded up in the trash can.

Excellent point! I'de also add that a significant number of creative types didn't really produce their best work until after age 40. The music business puts a premium on youth and beauty and we are often left with the impression that you have to be 18 to 21 to be a good songwriter.

Thanks for all the interesting ideas. I can only add that I have a little digital voice recorder that I take to work with me everyday. It's small and light enough to fit in my pocket. As I'm walking to or from work, words or tunes often pop into my head. I just pull out this thing and capture them forever.

Some of them have been turned into great songs (to me) that would have been instantly forgotten had I not used this little gem. I've written all my songs this year like this. And I've got big composite wav files full of these ideas to keep me going when I have blank periods -- which is most of the rest of my life! It's also cool to listen back to these snippets once the final song is complete to see how it evolved.

my songwriting was at its best during my divorce or when I had an alcohol problem, or a drug habbit....... disaster is a great inspiration.
