Editing shouldn't really be all that hard or complicated. Much depends upon exactly how well one's editor actually handles this kind of thing, but all of them I've used should handle what I'm envisioning just fine (exact details and order of operation may vary slightly from editor to editor):
1. Record a single vocal track. (However long that takes)
2. Clone that track to create two identical tracks. (5 seconds)
3. Group the tracks. (5 sec.)
4. Scrub through the track and set region markers at each transition between whisper and scream. (1 min.)
5. Set volume envelopes in both tracks with handles on each region marker (1 min.)
6. Pull handles down on track 1 to mute whisper regions, do the same on track 2 to mute scream regions. (1 min.)
7. Ungroup the tracks. (5 sec.)
8. Adjust channel gain/trim on each track to get a rough volume balance where you want it (30 sec.)
Of course this doesn't include seperate EQ/compression, etc. one may want/need to use on each track seperately, but that stage has to be handled no matter what. But the editing it takes to be all set up for that part of it just fine should take, by my estimates above, under four minutes to perform via some very basic and simple editing tasks.
[Even if it took one over twice as long (you gotta have a sip of coffee, joke with the client, go take a piss...), we're still talking maybe roughly 10 minutes altogether, at most.]

crap the singer bailed on me do now i can't test it out..
but i was just wondering..i was watching a video of diney tracking vocals for their cartoons..and they use 2 mics.. one about 6 inches away the other one about 1 foot away...does this relate to what we are talking about in any way?
