I own a nice LDC and a nice SDC (and have a decent ribbon on the way). Can anyone help w/ mic placement ideas - and or any compression or eq tips that have worked for you?

I tracked a Stand-up Bass this last weekend. I used a U195 and just moved it around until I found a balance between Bottom and Strings that I liked. I ended up at a position similar to pointing at the 12th fret on a guitar.

I have played upright about a year now. Here is what I have found so far.
SM57 = keep looking
SM81 ~ 1 foot from bridge = good
SM7b ~ 1 foot from bridge = better
Beta 52 ~ 1foot from bridge = strange, but I like it

The Beta 52 was a big surprise. The builtin EQ captures the attack of the fingers on the right hand and the low end at the same time. I haven't tried it in a mix yet, but I will.

At this link (read the whole document!),

Harvey Gerst recorded an upright bass with a Behringer EM8000 pointed at the ceiling and liked the sound. There are actually several tips for recording upright bass in that document, along with a lot of other great advice.
