Hi, I looked around and didn't find any posts too similar to this, but if it is covered somewhere else already, sorry. I'm new to recording and have some questions before I move any further forward. My goal is currently to record just my guitar. The music I play/want to record ranges from Tool to acoustic stuff.

My plan is to use my mackie 1402 vlz mixer, run it into an M-audio Audiophile 2496 soundcard, which I don't have yet, and sequence it in, cubase sx3 which I have. If it matters, I use a digitech rp350 effects pedal/preamp. My plan is to use line in, but I've heard that using a mic has it's advantages as well, thoughts?

My question is: Am I taking the righ path? Will this setup work well for me? Is there anything that I am missing? Is there an alternative method that would better suit my needs? Any advice or information Would be greatly appiciated, thanks very much.

Do you want to record vocals?
You may want to compare cost of the audiocard vs. a mic & stand& cable like an sm57 ($79 on ebay), this would give you two channels making cutting scratch demo traxs much simpler.
I'm assuming since you have cubase you then have a computer with a stereo input/ output on mini trs jacks. if you do then with that mackie i'd run l/r to the card with your guitar and mic on ch 2/1
You should be able to come back out from cubase into the mackie again (tape returns on rca) to layer ontop of the trax after the first take.
Get some headphones for tracking; (run into your stereo for mixing).
Look into a multiple channel AD converter later when you have cash and the channels to track (meaning more mics or instruments)
Have fun!
