recording only effect

I'm using an effects unit (behringer virutalizer) on my aux i/o's. I'm wondering how you can record ONLY the effect, rather than the effect mixed with the original, dry signal. Example, I want to record my voice w/ pitch shift, but when I try, even if I turn the returns all the way up, it's still mixed about 50/50 with the original, non pitch shifted voice.

Any suggestions?

I have the MD4S, so the MD8 might be different. Set up a track for buss recording (i.e Left), and then make sure you pan the channel your mic is plugged into to the right. Then when your returns come in, the left channel of your aux will be sent to track 1. Make sure nothing else is being sent to the left buss. Hope this helps!

You can record ONE TRACK WITH EFFECTS. {REVERB}

Check the manual. It is fairly clear how to do this. I've done it before so If the GReen One can do it, so can you.

I really prefer to use effects while the singer is doing the vocal; however, I don't mix the effects until I make the final mix.

Since I use two effects boxes, I can really do some stuff, up to a limit, with two or more tracks.

I think my question was misunderstood. Here's an example: When I record a pitch shift (an octave up), and listen to it, I hear the pitch shifted part, as well as the orignal. So The effect is only being mixed 50/50 with the original when it is sent back to the channel. I want to hear ONLY the wet (voice an octave up) and cut out the dry (voice normal). Does that make sense?

I don't quite get what you are trying to do but it sounds like your signal path is cluttered somewhere. Someone out there should know: THEY ALWAYS DO!

Can you (1) run your aux out into the Virtualizer and then into a different track? Then just turn your original track down, or...

(2) if you only want the effects, then run your voice through the Virtualizer and then the MD-8 in series, skipping the MD-8 altogether (I'd imagine you want your original vocals though, try one).

I HAVEN'T done this with the MD-8, but it makes sense that any aux you got going out can come back in through another track, allowing you to get rid of all the other tracks. (are you getting JUST fx through the virtualizer, BTW?)

Assuming I understand your question (and it's not too late to respond), here's what I do:

Send signal from desired track/input to AUX buss via aux 1 or 2, into FX box ins and return via 9-10 or 11-12 inputs. Do not select group switch on the original track/input. Select group switch on 9-10/11-12 to go to desired destination track. Record to that track with the group button.

FX box should be set to 100% for maximum 'wet' signal. Since the original track is not routed to the groups, it will not be heard - only what comes from the FX box.
