what program are you using to record? You just need multitrack software. Lots out there, but maybe you already are using something. If not, download n-track and read the notes with it.

You need to purchase a sound card that has 4 inputs on it, there is a wide selection, Do a search and find out what every one on this board recomends.

something similar to that...seems like you are just starting out, i wouldnt go crazy with gear until you find out if you like doing it straight into the pc or not.

Mic input?!!...
Usually you want to steer clear of the mic input as they tend to be very noisy. You should try to use your soundcard's line input instead. (You'll need a mixer or preamps or DI box to get signal up to line level) And, if you just want to be able to record 2 mono signals at once (guitar and bass are often recorded mono), you should be able to use a soundcard that can accept 1 stereo signal. Just send 1 signal in on the left channel and 1 signal in on the right channel. (If you have a mixer, it's easy to do this. Otherwise, you may need to do a little cable-making.) Then, in your software, select 1 track's input to be from your soundcard's Left Line In and the 2nd track's input to be from your soundcard's Right Line In.

This might be a stupid question but seeing as i dont know anything about recording yet.... Do all programmes support any type of soundcard?

not exactly, but most do support a great variety of cards. If I were you, I´d ask to the soundcard seller what programs it can work with.

the only way to know if it works BW is firstly before you buy it email the manufacturer with details of the chipset and motherboard your using.
ask if your config is compatible.
try and buy on approval as well so you can return it and get your money back if it does not fit in with the pc you are using.
if you scan the net certain sound cards seem to have some problems while others dont. the first thing to do is find out what chipset you are using eg : SIS, VIA whatever and the make of motherboard.
