Looking for a good female vocal mic for under $200.

Someone told me that the mxl 990 sounds pretty good on female vox, and they are dirt cheap. What about a SP B1 or maybe if I'm lucky on ebay, a ksm 27?

emmylou harris vocals? or joan jett vocals? or celine dion vocals? lotta range in "female vocals", there.

one of the best vocal sounds i've ever gotten was on a female singer-songwriter type and i used an MXL V77. it was the right mic for the voice for the songs.

can't recommend the mxl 990 for much of anything (although my brother in law's gotten some good electric guitar out of one), and while the B1 is good on a number of things, vocals would be about the last place i'd put it.

i'd look for a used V77 if i were you. they tend to be a little more than $200, though......but not a lot. or maybe a BLUE dragonfly, which is considerably more than $200. i think "female vocals" typically requires a nicer mic than "male vocals".......but of course, YMMV.

cheers,
wade

An AT 3035 might be a good one, but like he said, it depends on the type of vocal.

Interestingly enough, my last mic chosen for female vocals in an album shoot out was an SM7. Sounded great and was chosen over an AT-4050, Neumann Gefell M582h, Beyer M834, GT MD3, Sennheiser 541, Beyer M88 and a Beyer M500. Americana/Rock music.

With diligence you can get a used SM7 for @$200 (at least that's what my two cost me). With some diligence and luck, the Beyer M500 and Beyer M88 can also be found for around $200 and are also good female vocal mics on the right voices.

I (along with the rest of my band) am raving about the SM58 on vocals atm. Our singer (yes, female) has a very gritty/growly vocal sound when she wants it, and the '58 picks it up well. I also like the AKG C3000, but nobody else here agrees!
