hi we were hoping to set up a small recording area for my daughter in her bedroom for christmas. She has a laptop and pc so could run from eiether. She is an amazing singer and just want something quiett basic and easy to use any ideas???

If you have a Mac, Garageband is the most basic and easy to use. All you need is a mic and interface and headphones, or just a USB mic and headphones if you are going REALLY basic.

ok, well if you're just going to be recording vocals, then a 2 channel interface will be fine.
A lexicon alpha is probably good enough, but if you want to go for something a little more 'hi-fi' then check out these audio interfaces.

For a mic, you probably want a condenser and this is really going to depend on how much you want to spend.

For lowish end something like an Audio Technica AT2035
If you want something that's going to really show off a great voice then something like a Rode NTK would sound more professional but it is double the price.

you'll need a mic cable and stand too.

For something simple to use, check out Reaper for the recording software. It's very cheap to buy and easy to get used to.

How old is your daughter, what style of music does she like, & does she have a Mac or PC?

If your going to go the USB microphone route check out the Blue yeti HERE and HERE is Reaper ..... this is a free FULL trial version that will never expire just have to put up with a nag screen upon start up. If you like Reaper (and I'm sure you will) the cost is $40.

How old is she? Is this for karaoke or you think this is going to be a career? You think she will get into mixing and playing music too?

IMO the Garage Band route, or something similar, is probably the best way to go. Regardless of what gear you buy her, don't get anything too complex for the first round, and include a basic user course in the gift package. Last summer, Guitar Center had a series of clinics on Garage Band- they were quite good, and free. Make a personal commitment to bringing her to the classes or clinics, too.
