You need to consider two options:

1 Buy an eight-channel mixer with USB output. This will allow you to mix the drum mikes on the mixer and send a mixed stereo output via USB to the laptop.

2 Buy an eight channel interface (e.g. a Firestudio or similar), and record eight track simultaneously direct to your laptop. But you would need a firewire card to do this (unless you find an eight-channel USB interface).

What kind of music do you plan to record? Depending on the needs of the project, you can get a beautiful kit sound with very few mics (3, 2 if you're lucky, or even 1 if mono will work and you've got a good room).

That might help with the budget issue.

What kind of budget are we talking about here? do you have a couple hundred to spend or like 7-8 hundred to spend. I think the best and easiest way would to get an 8 chanel interface. We ordered the M-audio profire 2626 and audix drum mic set. the interface comes built in with a mixer, and has almost no latency or delay. you can mix the drums on the computer and then record directly into your software. i believe that is the easiest and most likely cheapest way to go.

Your interface alone is going to come to at least that.

I've hit a similar situation.

The 2 interfaces i am considering though are:-

Lexicon Ionix U82S

M-Audio Fast Track Ultra

some of the presonus ones are good, i still say the profire 2626.. i got it for only 520 off of campuplus.com, but if you show guitar center that they will beat the price by 10% of the difference so youll only pay like 480-490 which is a steal!
