My interface supports instrument level DI (Mackie Onyx Satellite) and it also supports send/return. I have considered running my guitar directly my interface at instrument level, and running the send to my miced amp. This would allow me to record the DI and the amp in a single take.

However, I am unsure at how the sound level coming out of the send of the interface would compare to the level coming straight out of the guitar. My guess is that it would be louder. I could send that signal to a mixer with the fader down. But I'm not sure how that would work and if it would suck the life out of the tone.

You set the levels the same on the track faders on the DAW.
problem solved.

Maybe I wasn't clear on my question. But I was referring to the differences in these signals:

gtr -> amp
gtr -> interface (DI) -> interface send -> amp

and how the sent signal from the interface would differ from the signal directly from my guitar. This is all before it enters the DAW

well.... of course there is going to be a difference between the 2 signals
i am confused what you are getting at.

you are routing the seperate signals to seperate tracks, right?

You may find the tone is affected by running the signal through the interface due to an impedance mismatch. Ideally you should use a reamp/"reverse DI" box for the signal running back the amp, however some people find it fine just to use the interface line out.

Alternatively you can buy a DI box with a balanced output (which you feed into one of your interface's inputs) and a 'thru'/'passthru'/'bypass' output which you can feed into your amp. This is what I usually do.

I'm sorry for being vague. I guess I am asking how to make line out signal the same as the guitar signal. The post above me answers the question.

I tried running the line out to my amp, and the signal way really loud and broken up. I ran it though a mixer and turned the signal down. But the noise of the mixer was very apparent through the amp.

Does anyone recommend any particular re-amp box for this purpose?

The radial RMP works pretty good....or if you don't already own a DI which I am assuming you don't then the Radial X-amp is a DI and Reamp box built into one unit.
