Hello All,

I have a Tascam 244 4-Track Tape Recorder that has just been recently serviced, like a week ago serviced. It had been fully repaired but there is just one slight issue. I first must say that I am a total noob to home recording let alone working a Tape Recorder, but I did find the basics down. I have set up everything, my microphone, my guitar and my headphones and the switches set to start recording, but as soon as I press Record and Play, nothing happens. The numbers start counting but the record button continues flashing red. I have tried looking up any other forum for a similar issue but nothing. I have tried pressing hard and even putting in a tape with already recorded tape and it did work but it would not record an empty tape. I hope someone will be able to help me with this issue.

Have you got the user manual? Page 36 has a very detailed procedure for recording the first track.

Yea that’s where I got the steps to try to make it work and it didn’t. I tried pressing hard on the button, pressing play then record, pressing both play and record and nothing worked, so I’m kind of at a stop point of not sure what to do.

Man. I'm sorry to hear that. I was hoping you may have omitted a step or two we could latch onto. It would seem as if your only option is to take it back and have them check it out.

I have an old 246 that I think is sort of similar, but haven't used in a long time. It sounds like no tracks are 'armed/ready' to record which may result in the blinking record light. When you say the 'numbers start counting', I'm assuming the heads have moved to engage the tape and tape is rolling in the transport(?) To set up a track to record do you have the switches set as shown below?(been a long time, I think this is correct)

Just a thought, but the record protect tab isn't missing, is it?

I should make a note that every other button does function properly, playback works, zero return works, reset works, fast forward works, play, pause and stop work but record does not work.

Update, I FOJND OUT MY PROBLEM!! It was just a user problem haha, the tapes that I bought didn’t have safety tabs so I just put a piece of tape over it and it let me record thanks everyone for your input!!

Ah yes, the little tab on the back that nobody ever thought about! I doubt many people knew there was a record protect tab, probably didn't know about the second set of indentations that is supposed to set it up for type II Chrome/FeCo tape, and a third set in the middle that can trigger settings for metal tape.

So, what type of cassettes are you using?

I’m sorry for not responding sooner because I wasn’t sure what this meant but I looked into it further and this was my problem thanks a lot man you saved me form nearly tearing down the Tascam 244 to see if replacing the buttons was the solution haha

I am using Type 2 Chrome 90 cassette tape I had bought another tape to use and it alreayd had the security tabs on it but it had already recorded stuff on it so I was never able to use it

I have found that I do really well if I never push that button. Be careful.
